The converse of that is probably more important. If they want more "family friendly" movies, then they SHOULD patronize those movies and, and this is key, but LOTS of concessions when they do. Then, the exhibitors will want more of that type of film, and the studios will begin to respond.
Contrary to Chicago-style economics, until there is demand at the end of the chain, there is no reason to supply.
