Yea, that's light scatter. Also DLP can not do true black because of the limited range the mirrors can move.

I always thought that DLP worked on a frequency basis.
Each mirror can point in one of two directions - towards the screen (eventually) or to a dead end. If over the period (say 1/24 of a second)the mirror reflected to the dead end, you got black. So the brightness depended on the proportion of the time light was transmitted. So what's the problem in getting black?

Among other issues, that the 'dead end' is not a real 'dead end', but just halfway dead.

Most of the light not hitting the screen is hitting a heat sink. This heat sink is originally powder-coated in a dark paint, but after a while, the paint starts to burn off. It's a nice indication of just how much light you try to contain.

So, like Carsten already mentioned, the "dead end" isn't really the Dead End, some of the light will reflect back. The same goes for the light that falls between the individual mirrors for example. Also, the light coming from the light source is never perfectly directional, it will contain light that will hit the equipment in the light engine at an odd angle and eventually leak out through the lens and hit the screen.
