It actually might be possible to construct a light engone with more than 4 imaging chips that could do say 8K or 16K resolution. Now 16K might be adaquate to fill the Imax screen. How and what type of server could feed that much data is a staggering thing to contemplate. It would most certainly need to be interconnected with ultra high speed fibre like the phone company uses. Links of that nature cost upwards of 50K each! So in theory it might actually be possible. It would be the SSME of projection technology!

It would put the last shovel of dirt on IMAX's grave. I would think the cost would be prohibitive.

That's truly sad. But my point remains... that technology works, and it's in the can. It only needs widespread implementation, which would be relatively simple to do. The hardware is already in place in a lot of theaters all over the world. From what I understand, it only needs a software upgrade, and different sound files. No expensive DLP installation necessary.

It wouldn't take much to do, but unfortunately no one in the industry cares enough to nudge the issue forward, which is a real bummer especially considering the quality of sound possible on the new HD DVD home theater formats. [Frown]

Mark,

I think the part of the problem is that todays mixes are not up to the range of the lossless system in general. New mix practices and higher quality material with far greater dynamic range would be needed over what they are using today. Also I'm not sure that theaters need any more dynamic range than they already have. There are already enough complaints of sound being too loud when played back on properly calibrated systems... much of that thanks to the jackasses that mix the preview tracks.

What is the rough cost of running one IMAX performance (projector/lamp/sound/technician)?

Most large format rentals are a flat per seat not a percentage
