I agree with 2 and 3 Louis but I think aside from exhibitors needing Light Engine failure insurance the rest of it is fine as-is. Since 2K is the defacto standard with 4K on the horizon and already in the standard that these projectors will probably not ever be to the point that if parts do become obsolete that new boards won't be built for them to keep em running. Not that improvements won't take place but any improvements will most likely be at board level and software levels allowing easy upgrades to be accomplished in the future.

Wolf,
To be fair I should also point out that there was a theater that reported in to Dolby while the seminar was going on that had run it 2000th faultless show. I wouldn't begin to speculate where your problems lie but calling Dolby would be the wise thing to do. The system can and does work well. They definately would want to know about your woes.

Mark

My concern with obsolesence is purely financial, Mark. This wonderful system will not allow survival if it not only doesn't GO, but requires expensive upgrades to remain viable. (I have not considered what will happen to those who buy equipment from companies who "grab the big money" and then disappear in bankrupcy.) (I speak with personal knowledge with a certain Microsoft based office computer network......set us back 18 months.) Louis

Jeepers! I would purely LOVE to go to this. Is Dolby videotaping these lectures, or offering home-study materials? Might be a good idea.

Btw, I want some manuals on all this stuff...

Tim,
I never could figure out why you're wasting all your talents away... why don't you get back into this buisness? Either way you're still on the road....

Projection skills and showmanship are needed for both film and digital projection, certainly for "Film Done Right" and "Digital Done Right".

Career options, mental note, truck driving. I better look into getting a bigger licence. Cinema wages have gone down substantially over the last 20 years here in Sydney and to be perfectly honest I do not think that D Cinema will be giving me a pay rise in the near future. My current manager makes it well known that he resents the projection staff being paid the hourly rate that we are on, which is 2/3 what it was 10 years ago. Unfortunately everyday living costs are dramatically more now!
Any other career option suggestions, perhaps this could be a new thread. [Roll Eyes]
Ps Umm Dolby if you need any staff in Sydney, Australia, just click on the email tab above [Smile]

Mark, that's very kind of you to say.

Okay, I'll get back to you. But my fairy Godmother usually grants my wishes in about 30 days...

Seriously, with a lot of digital installations coming up competent and qualified technicians are very much in demand. To the extent that it appears that they hire just about anyone who can hold a screw driver. The specific skills for d-cinema are usually taught by the factories, so it is not something you have to already know. But obviously, if you know about all the other stuff already, it will be very easy for you to pick it up. "Conventional" cinema knowledge is still very much needed because all the equipment needs to be integrated with existing installations.

My honest opinion is that the worst part with D Cinema is that it will never stay the same. Every now and then new upgrades, new BETTER formats which give Better Sharper picture always trying to reach the original 35mm film which probably will never happen but no one will be able to tell the difference anyway. But another issue that has come to mind. Films that are shot using 35mm cameras then rendered on pcs to enchance the effects and everything and edit then and then transfered back on 35mm, wouldn't there be any loss on the image quality from the original to the final?
Best Regards
D
