do we know somehow the percentage of theaters using mini perf and standard perfs ? probably the cost of miniperfts and the low % of digital equipped theaters ( dlp or ila) dictate the low percentage of miniperforated screens ( my guessing).

speaking of digital, Lucas just said he was disappointed of the low rs of digital cinema theaters in the US, which he would have hoped to be much large for his new baby coming in May
I wonder how EPISODE II will look like when transfered on film and projectored with 35mm projectors... grainy ?

Kodak has been doing significant work objectively comparing images originated on film and images originated on HD digital cameras. The results of this work has been presented at several recent SMPTE technical conferences. The March 2002 SMPTE Journal has one of the papers "Assessing the Quality of Motion Picture Systems from Scene-to-Digital Data" by Dr. Roger A. Morton, Michelle A. Maurer, and Christopher L. DuMont.

From my experience 'pixilation' comes down to image resolution and magnification.
For my set up when projecting a 10' x 9' image from 30' screen hole size is approx 25% of pixel size (1024x768) thus a noticeable effect.
However with different projectors and throw distances it will change.
The closer to the viewer to screen the worse the pixellation, but the further back the harder to focus on the image esp. for data shows and text.
The only real answer is high res.(and brightness) projector and a non-perforated screen.
If sound opaqueness is needed, look at audio transperent top and bottom masking etc.

ahh stuff it use film for sake.
If got to use LCD or like for data shows rear project onto fresnel screen

applying the THX recommendation of tweeters and mediums aligned on same height can be indeed a nightmare for home theater. yet, CRTs and DILA ( with their 93%+ fill factor ) do handle microperforated screens much easier. For me, for home theater, I really never advise people to use perforated screens smaller than 12-13feet: such large screens create much less interaction with DLP-lcd and allow for longer viewing distance (15-20ft), making microperforations completely invisible. And since cinema speakers have much longer "range" than consumers speakers, it's an ideal combination: big screen ,microperforated, cinema sound.

Has anyone tried a micro-perf screen with current 2K digital projectors? The reason I ask is I installed digital at my theater and didn't replace the screen and now I notice a bit of moire interference on scenes with solid colors, especially white and blue. I've noticed it on both 3D and 2D movies. Does having smaller sound perforations make any difference?

I don't have a microperf screen currently, but would be looking at a Hurley.
