Author Topic: Digital cinema not coming soon to a theatre near you Tony Bandiera Jr Film God Posts: 3067 From: Moreland Idaho Registered: Apr 2004 posted 11-18-2004 12:14 AM                     Having worked at UC Irvine for 8 years now, meeting filmmakers from all over the world and being asked when/if D-Cinema will ever take over, here's my stock answer: The brain perceives the images from a film projector and D-C in two totally different ways, (Shutter Flicker, actual flashing of a complete frame image at 48/72 per seconds vs. the imaging manipulation of digital, etc.)so the visceral impact is totally different; D-Cinema projection has a long way to go to match the resolution/quality of a good 35mm print; D-Cinema's technology is too immature and unreliable right now (I have witnessed how easy it is for the "projectionists" of a major chain here to completely crash the Q-Bit system!!) and the theatres I know personally running D-C STILL run a 35mm back-up delayed 5 minutes on Fri./Sat. at the minimum!! And it just looks like (as one customer said to me) "I felt like I was watching a friggin' giant TV with a hundred strangers in my living room." Now on the other hand, I strongly believe that digital is the way to go for production and editing. The resolution of (and new generation lenses for) digital cameras are well beyond excellent, and we all know how easy (so to speak) it is to edit in the digital domain. BUT FOR DISTRUBUTION AND EXHIBITION, FILM PRINTS ARE THE ONLY WAY TO GO!! Finally of course we all know that film technology is firmly entrenched and no has yet proven a more reliable or cost-effective way!! (I don't buy the arguement of print costs vs. D-Cinema, how much does a Q-bit system cost? You could buy a lot of prints for the same money I'd bet.) The reaction? (North of Dallas) Registered: Jun 99 posted 11-24-2004 03:41 AM                     Not me. I have a backup but it stays in the cans. Right now, there probably isn't any cost savings. The studios pay someone to come out to each site and QC, aka screen, each and every copy. They seem to think that the data will be corrupted in the transfer from one disk to the other. I am fully capable of screening my own movies and supplying feedback if there is a data glitch. There are checksums when the data is transferred, the OS has checks and balances too.
