My testing with anamorphics did not show any loss - the straight math showed me that the lumens required to give me 14FL for flat would give me 11.3FL for scope, real world measurements showed 11 FL for scope (my tests were with the Christie and Isco anamorphic).

Tests I ran in our shop showed about half the light loss of the Wide Converter lens, about 8% or there abouts, I mistakenly said 8fl in my first post. I have yet to see any anamorphic with almost zero light loss. Leads me to wonder if we had the same ISCO anamorphic or not.

Unless there was a price drop recently the cost of the WCL lens plus motorized mount adds almost 50% to the lens cost.

The way Christie has "ranged" their zooms it would mean a second entire zoom in about 20% or more of the situations encountered... now 4K in my mind is alot less than 8K which is the average zoom lens price these days. There also used to exist a manual lens mount for the WCL but they discontinued it due to lack of interest.

The manual mount also violates DCI's "unattended changeover" when using two lenses sentence . . . . . . . of course they don't mention what to do if the manual zoom on the lens can do both formats.

I can beleive 8% . . . . . . that's about 1FL . . . . . . I can say I trust my light meter within .5FL so I may have seen up to 4-5% loss without knowing (prob should have said that in my original reply along with saying "minimal" loss) . . . . . I'll verify which anamorphic I had for testing (I also have to run the comparison on the WCL now that they have been installed)

I'm curious to see if the new Schneider lens works out - the one that has the extra elements that drop into place inside the lens for the 1.25 zoom.

Personally I like anamorphics solely for their efficient use of available light and power - even with more light loss than the WCL you don't need to significantly ramp lamp power up to compensate for using less area on the chip (using the WCL for scope needs about an 18% rise in current over flat).

All these lens dilemas over the choice of DCI to make scope the smaller and least efficient format . . . . . . . it is going to drive some extremely cost concious exhibitors to fixed width screens instead of fixed height.

So, let's say I've got a house with a 60 ft screen - common width screen with drop masking for scope.

Which then would be better: the WCL setup or a regular anamorphic lens/attachment on front of a CHRISTIE?

Monte,

DCI does not allow anamorphics. And yes, the anamorphic would probably be the better choice but at 2.5 times the price of the WCL.
