While I've heard the Kodak server is VERY VERY good you have my sympathy on the BARCO. The latest Barco news I heard today is that they are moving away from the sealed light engine and in the Barco vs. Christie shootout that happened recently at Malco Theaters the Christie CP-2000SB beat the DP-3000 by 20% in light level. Same lamp, same lens, same screen. Oh well...

T.I. is also releasing new 1.2" DMD's in September that will allow full chip 2048 X 1080 resolution at triple flash rate. This will mean a huge increase in the image quality of 3-D as well as capability for a brighter image.

I too just finished helping with a Barco DP-3000 install, only in this case it was packaged with Dolby's Show Player and Show Store. It replaced film capability on that screen completely - we'll see how it does tech-wise starting Friday. The 3D trailers I saw during test and lineup looked good.

Fun with the Barco: there are two little lights on the top rear corners of the projector which indicate general status, green is good, red is not good. Lately, our little lights have spent most of their time red. You reboot the projector itself, they start up green, and a show or two later, red again. Since Barco has yet to send us the cable to connect the projector's control panel, we have no way to read what the error is. And, I called the Kodak number the Barco rep gave us for all tech support, both Kodak and Barco, and received no answer! When I got this kind of treatment from a $15 a month internet provider, I immediately canceled service and fought tooth and nail to get my money back. I don't know why we should put up with this from a company whose supposedly professional system we paid seven figures for.

In other news, I am getting another Barco for my largest theater in order to finish our six week play obligation on Journey, while simultaneously picking up another six week obligation for Fly Me to the Moon. By August 15th, 40% of the seats in my building will be dedicated to crappy 3D movies that nobody comes to see! Not only does the digital install mess up the arrangement of my 35mm equipment, but the screen in my largest theater is outside the size limitations outlined in the Real D manual. I don't know how they plan on employing a real projectionist 30+ hours a week to run the all digital booth they plan on having by year's end, especially since they have yet to give us any training on the thing at the theater level. This may be a good time to update my resume...

Galen,
The folks that run your theaters must be real suckers. Its also obvious they didn't do their homework.. had they done it there would be NEC/Dolby or Christie/Dolby in your theater and no BARCO. Like I always say to BARCO owners having problems "Let The Fun Begin"!!

So of our 17 screens, we have 11 that run Christie CP2000 on Dolby Servers. I have friends at theatres that have other projectors. I put it simply, we have NEVER once had a problem that was the fault of the projector. I don't believe that there is yet a 'perfect show store or show player' nor do I believe that Digital Projection is perfect. But if you want the best there is right now, it's the CP2000, plain and simple.

Well, my lamp is getting on in hours, and nobody has bothered to train us on replacing it. The thing tries to strike twice, and has taken to failing both times. Calls to their "24 hour tech support" have consistently reached their voice mail. Good stuff!
