I think we would be the first to know if that was a case or am I wrong?

These type or requirements come down from the studio's.

Often the reason the studio's want content deleted right after a pre-screening is because sometimes the pre-scren package is different than the wide release print (even if it is just a different CPL ID)
Wide release keys distributed later will not work on this content, and it causes problems for sites that assume that since they already did a pre-screening that their content is AOK. Then, surprise.... Opening day and your content does not work. You then have to re-ingest the new feature package and in the meantime you have missed your first two shows.

Anyhow, that's my take from the distribution end.

And there would be nothing wrong with that if they would just say that was the deal and not have the Nazi goonsquad there treating us like criminals.

Print one out some time Louis. You'll need several reams of paper to do so. ON top of that the decryption signal is constantly rolling at different intervals. So you'd have to know how it rolls and so on... I beleive the CIA uses similar FIPS certified encryption/decryption as well. So anyone with the means might also enlighten us to many other interesting things...

The fact you can copy them, scares them. It will take them some time before they actually understand how this all works.

James,
And this is where they have their heads so far up their butts that its a joke. The fact remains that I can take my Kodak Vi6 into ANY theter and get a very good 720P copy of the film right off the screen up to about 2.5 hours duration. Distribution has spent so much time and effort on the complexity of all the security that they still overlook the simple possibilities.

Assuming they're using very high bit strength asymmetrical key encryption methods, if it was hacked we'd have much bigger problems on our hands than movies being copied.

Well, umm, what steps has anyone here taken to eliminating the occurrences of piracy by patrons?

Until it disappears (which, with what I've seen industry-wide, it never will) the security is going to continue.

First two shows? How are you ingesting the movie, 33.6 baud modem?

I agree with what Brad said. Let the theater know why they need to delete it and they will. No shows will be lost.

Because movies are just as important as national security.

The upper management-moron types have to justify their foney-baloney existence, some how. This just goes to prove how totally removed from reality they are.

I guess that's one area where I'm glad we don't run any Hollywood movies on our digital screens. The studios we deal with are generally pretty easygoing (let's face it: Indian studios know their films have been pirated long before I ever receive the things). My big beef, apart from the atrociously late delivery times (I get drives as late as early afternoon opening day), is when studios (so far, all non-Hindi) decide to make edits to the film after release, and send out new CPL packages that have to be ingested (then you have to replace the feature segments in your show compositions).

They should be much more concerned about theft from within the studios and their own organizations, where films could potientially be stored unencrypted and uncompressed. Its just like at the doctor's office, where I have to sign a bunch of privacy notification mumbo-jumbo. I could walk into any hospital in the country, unchallenged, and walk out with any information I want. Are you a family member? Yes! And I've never been asked to prove it.
