With the greatest of respect I've got to say I really don't hold with whole "you shouldn't install anything on a Doremi" attitude. Yes there are valid reasons why not 'anybody' should be able to fiddle but not to go so far as saying that nobody expect those authorised should touch the machinery.
For example I've tried to get the TI software for our projector but can't as NEC told me I need to be an authorised technician. Authorised by who? - I own the equipment but apparently am not 'authorised' to open the bonnet/hood. Very, very frustrating - but there ARE lots of very helpful people here who do their best to give out info, and it really is appreciated. But maybe we should all collectively be pushing for greater openness with digital equipment rather than allowing the studios and the equipment manufacturers to shroud everything in a cloak of secrecy? Then it would not be so much of a mystery how to get box 'a' to talk to box 'b' etc.

you should not install anything on a doremi regardless! You never know how the doremi software reacts with a "foreign" program. All big companies do not usually allow custom software to be installed on PCs. It's virtually impossible to track down a problem on a computer if your PC fleet has random software running on it.

What I think Mike meant was "you do not need to install anything, the feature comes with the doremi SW".

Marco I understand what you were saying and why - I just think that maybe the cinema industry goes a little overboard with all this stuff. If a user installs software that they should not have then that may void any warranty or support agreement - but it's the users responsibility not the company who made or provided the software or hardware I think.

anyway, why should you install anything on a doremi? If Shlomo had installed an ssh client, would have he sorted out his problems? No, he needs something that works with the doremi GUI. Hence the doremi feature.
What we may need on servers are additional features, I have never felt the need to install extra software on them.

Fair comment Marco. A few extra features on a Doremi would not go amiss. By the way, what is 'listmaker' on a Doremi? I have not seen it before as it only appears if you login as 'root'.

There's no need to install telnet. As you found out, using telnet or even hyperterminal on a PC you can send messages to a device.
With the Doremi you have to set up the AP20 as a raw device in device manager, then send it the messages in a macro ... formatted correctly.
The problem is that the server sends the message and says all is well, it's up to you to have the port and message correct so it does anything. As far as I know, only if it fails to make the connection do you get a server error message.
Doremi could add the device in its library, like they have for things like the Jnior, ECNA, etc. Adding the device usually produces a set of basic commands in the macro editor as well and/or if you know the command structure (this is pretty arcane hex stuff with the Jnior) you can send your own custom messages. Possibly Doremi even has this available for the AP20 if you ask for it?

Marco Listmaker appears in the Doremi Apps menu - but only shows up if you are logged-in as root. I can't find any documentation on it.
It appears to be some sort of playback module.

Listmaker is or was a different software product from Doremi to control playback on Doremi playout machines from remote Windows machines. On the Doremi DCI servers, it might be a local counterpart for this software. Might be used to control playback externally without the cinelister functions?

If you google 'doremi listmaker', you will find some references.

But let's not continue in this thread...

1. Installing Telnet wouldn't solve my former problem but sure would've helped.. instead of connecting my laptop directly to the AP20 and the control it VIA VNC etc.. to run commands through telnet would have been troublesome. If the macro wouldn't have worked i would've just needed to make two script for the commercials and movie connect though the tms library via vnc and run them.

2. About installing software on doremi, if they wouldn't have taken out necessary default commands from linux (such as telnet and many more i've tried over time to use and failed) then you need to install it yourself. the point of installing software is not installing DIVX or FIREFOX so i could use it as a pc.. it's more so i could get more out of.
Certainly if doremi would add more features to make it more user friendly (i got some idea ;P) it would diminish the need to install software.. not remove. nothing is perfect.

1) If the unit works without that software package installed, one cannot claim the package was necessary.
2) The fact that there are plenty of linux distributions out there that by default don't install telnet, it can't be called a default. Also, this shows they didn't remove anything. They simply didn't install it. Heck, I'm running linux right now without telnet for several years.
3) Doesn't it make perfect sense for them to leave out inherently insecure software when they are trying to design a totally secure system?

There are very few "default" commands in Linux. Most prebuilt distributions are crammed with packages, but there are a few "secure" distributions that remove/omit the problem stuff. And Linux is inherently and unavoidably customizable: assuming you know how, you just build your own version with only what you need.
As an example Doremi does have a VNC package available to install but it is not part of the default software. This is not a secure package and should only be installed if you have a secure projection system network.
Telnet is one of those things you remove if you want to improve security.
You could install lots of packages on the server, it isn't difficult if you are adept with Linux. You don't know what problems might arise... but for certain there will be problems from Doremi tech support if your changes do cause trouble.
Listmaker is an external program that can control the server: as I recall, the server serial port is used as a "Sony 9-pin" interface. You might have to run listmaker locally as well to make it work, I've had some conversations about it with Doremi engineers because we have some non-theatrical installations where we were looking at ways to get non-standard control capability and some playback status data as well.
