I agree concerning the pre-printed labels that Deluxe provides. I like this because I can slap the pre-printed label on and bring the box over to the "Pack and Ship" store and put it on the "UPS Pick Up" Pile. Don't have to worry about the U.P.S. guy not showing up to pick up the drive at the theatre (odd hours).

In more ways than one I wish that Technicolor and Deluxe would get on the same page. Technicolor provides a log in so you can retrieve your feature keys and your "projectionist letters". Deluxe just gives out the informational .pdf's for the features - no log in to get keys.

I know that they are separate entities, but if they could just be on the same page with all of this!

Didn't they merge last year?

I have the same problem with UPS and pick up/delivery times. Generally speaking our first show on Friday is at 4pm. We show half Hollywood and half Bollywood films. Most weeks we are still waiting on movies for delivery on Friday. Most Fridays we get here and there is a missed delivery sticker on the door saying the next attempt will be on Monday......yeah right. We have called and told them our hours many times, but the GM has to hunt down the film 75% of the time. We also break movies for pick up Friday, a week later they are still sitting downstairs waiting. Why should we be charged for this?

Don't know how accurate this is, but at my last CinemaCon visit, I heard sometime in the future they hoped to do all of this via satellite. Just beam movies to theaters. I don't think this would happen next year or anything (heck, I don't really even know if it is true), but I would think within the next 10 years or so maybe we'd hear something about it if it was going to happen. Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.

That is already happening with some large chains but due to the huge amount of bandwidth required, plus the cost of the receiving equipment needed at the theatre (which nobody wants to pay for) it's not practical for "everybody" yet. But it's coming and will be nice when it happens.

I already have my content delivered by satellite for both Deluxe and Technicolor. I'm just a small independent 8 screen theater and it didn't cost me anything for either system. I just put in the request to both companies, filled out their paperwork and they came out, installed a dish on my roof, installed their equipment in a rack near my LMS, coordinated the install with Cinedigm and plugged their equipment into my switch. A few weeks later we were receiving all of our content via satellite. Deluxe and Technicolor pay for the equipment, pay for the install and pay for any maintenance. If for some reason the transfer fails and isn't on your system by early in the week, they ship out a hard drive although we've never needed to do that. On top of all that, the cost to the theater for each delivery is 1/2 of what a physical hard drive costs ($20 vs $40 per drive). We haven't had any issues with it at all and we're actually saving a couple grand per year in shipping costs!

Communication is another D-Cinema problem.

The above post is the first I've heard of Deluxe offering the Satellite downloads..

Another benefit, if you operate in NYS at least, is there's no sales tax on film rental if the movie is delivered by satellite. At 8% plus, that's a huge savings alone!

As long as the equipment is for free, it probably doesn't matter much, but due to the still limited bandwith, this is more suited to first runs. They can not put up a DCP on the dish only for you. They need to do it at a time when most cinemas need a transfer, and that is during the opening week.

I know a large multiplex with 11 screens, they have all available systems installed on their roof - yet still they pile up hard disc boxes in their booths.

I don't see a real benefit - other than live event broadcasting that comes with it usually - when you have to check your hard-disc AND satellite delivery for completeness.

Sales tax is a pass through tax. The customer is paying the tax on your ticket price and you are collecting it for the state. The tax should not be on just the film rental but on your whole ticket price.

Now common practice is to price your tickets with taxes included. You deduct the sales tax on your BORs before you calculate the film rental owed.

So if you have not changed your ticket price since receiving digital download you just raised your ticket prices.

I have seen many operators think of the sales tax as a cost of business. Technically it is not.

I am in the process of setting Satellite downloading up for two locations.

As much as some people don't like it, it is the future of our business. Just like D-Cinema itself, the theatres that currently use Technicolor's Thingest or Deluxe's Echostar program - are the beta testers of how we will be receiving content in the future.

Think about it: It's a cheaper way for the film companies to get thier product to the theatres. This whole D-Cinema thing was so the film companies could cut overhead costs.
