What a customers ultimate need is has nothing to do with being a certified soldering iron or being allowed to scrub pink elephants.

There are two parts to the issue here... The first part of the issue is... not having the customer go into the processor adjustments and messing with channel levels... With some mixes the LFE can be too hot for a DI (Oblivion comes to mind) and some a tad bit too weak. Car systems are never any where near our normal ISO standard! LCR are always fixed levels on my systems only controllable with the main fader. The external mixer allows the customer to simply adjust the sub channel slightly up or down if they want to.

The second issue is... If you ever have a van show up to a show with subs that can do 120+ db continuous level and over power everything else on the lot then you'll be glad you installed it? DI's also have neighboring homes at two locations I do. When that 120 db van shows up there is no need to make any possibly confrontational contact with the customer and insist he turn them down, the projectionist can simply do it him self without jeopardizing any other settings. In my service area most DI's are pretty small, The last DI conversion I did was a small 120 car lot and there are homes on both sides of it (lucky people!). And keep in mind that this issue might matter less on a 600 car lot depending on where those subs get parked...
