Author Topic: Satellite broadcasts -do you have the equipment? Carsten Kurz Film God Posts: 4340 From: Cologne, NRW, Germany Registered: Aug 2009 posted 10-14-2013 08:06 AM                     I don't know if other countries have different systems for live content - at least in germany all live content is broadcast in standard 1080i unencrypted DVB-S2, so the equipment needed is more or less consumer grade. Typically a cinema will use somewhat more reliable receivers and a larger dish (120 to 150cm) to achieve a more stable signal under adverse wether conditions, but the upfront cost are quite low. If you combine it with a DCP distribution contract, the equipment will usually even be supplied and installed for free here. We have a similiar very mixed situation here in germany with attendance - in some locations, they always outsell, in others, it's a complete flop. As the initial cost are usually low, I would always give it a try. I know that most locations doing the classic broadcasts usually add some specials like serving wine, champagne, upmarket snacks, etc., which the audience greatly acknowledges. Our audiences for MET Opera are reasonable - as a previous poster stated, seems to be the same ones who come to each performance. We also show all the National Theatre shows, as well as the odd ballet or outdoor concert. I would say it's an excellent strand to our programme - who else can go to watch a MET Opera LIVE for less than £15!? It has taken some trials and errors to get our technical setup to work fully. We've used various set top boxes, receivers - and we have had a few hiccups over the past 5 or so years we've had live screenings. However, as with anything new, these kind of issues were expected. We now use an Icecrypyt receiver, which is connected via a Denon AV Surround receiver to bypass the sound to to the Dolby processor. We also ... just in case ... have a back-up Technomate satellite reciever. Which we had to switch over to a few weeks back due to a technical issue with sending MET opera signals to Icecrypts. The Icecrypt also records onto the hard drive which is good for those encore performances you subscribe to.  |  IP: Logged
