I would check on one ICP/LD etc. If the MAC address is there, you have your 'serial number' for your records.

I guess that we all have to agree that there is no known way to do what the original poster asked.
So, may I suggest the use of a simple sticker applied on all working boards to document the MAC address, and trace every board from now on?
For the new -or removed- ones, if a swap should be made, the original poster can have both serial number and MAC address recorded. Both are universally unique identifications and broadly accepted as such.

If the reason is to track the boards, this could be a reasonably efficient way, given the fact that one does not want to remove the boards.
If a data base is made, it could have both numbers in the same or different fields. The same goes for a log.

There are a lot of ways, I guess.
