It is possible that temperature drift causes contact or electronic issues well below the spec'd critical temperatures of the system. Did you swap the cinema controller board already?

Talk about reinventing the wheel! So if your server goes down you replace the server and ICP because they are together. And if your ICP fails you also have to replace your server because it's part of the ICP. That's all so logical I just can't believe it. I guess the equivalent in the automotive industry would be if your engine failed you would also have to replace the transmission and vice versa. Single board projectors are next. [Eek!]

Parts are replaceable on the ICMP, the RAID card for example. I'm positive that if the server is out of warranty Barco will also provide the separate components - but I am not 100% sure to be honest. The ICMP is not a big epoxy cube.

Following your logic then the ICP should be split into different boards, one dealing with the formatters, one dealing with the picture, one that handles processes - so you can just replace what you need. Sounds like a great idea to me.

Just step back to Series 1 for that version of DLP! Of course many of those FPGA Integrated Circuits used on those boards are all obsolete now. The minimized parts count in Series 2 makes it far easier for a manufacturer (T.I.) to continue to support long term. I will just say that I like the ICP just the way it is. Highly reliable and easy to deal with if there are issues. IMHO putting the server on the ICP doesn't really gain you anything and may actually make future upgrades to either far less likely to happen. Nothing wrong in my book with the way Series 2 sits right now. Its design is still "separate enough" to maintain it's inherent flexibility and repairability.

The C projectors are rated up to 35°C. 30°C are quite high and Barco are usually quite overenthusiastic when it comes to temperatures: when you get a warning or an error there is probably something already liquefied in the machine [Smile]

That said, I wouldn't expect the 5817 if temperature is too high - unless Barco are aware of the problem.

When you clean your filters can you see through them? Mesh filters can get clogged with greasy and polluted air and won't come up clean when vacuumed. If they are not shiny silver and cannot see through them, wash them with hot water (and soda if required) as directed by Barco. It may be that your filters are clogged and the ICMP is overheating and shutting down - and the controller board simply sees that the "ICP" is not connected anymore.

I know a guy who was experiencing lamp shut downs: it turned out the filters were clogged and the ballast was overheating.

I'm editing here as your message was not there when I first replied.

ICP and reliability belong to different planets

4K 3D HFR is "nothing"?
Sure, because TI have proved in the past a great deal of 'pronto' upgrades when issues arose. I can think of the Enigma issue, which was dealt with almost instantly.

Mark, have you ever seen an ICMP?

They are on the same planet for me. 335 installs and one ICP failure in going on six years. I can't complain at all. And these are all NEC's! All of the oldest ICP's that I had to upgrade to T.I 3.0 are also still in daily use.

The enigma was not a part of the ICP Marco...

oh I forgot, your ICP's are blessed by NEC.

I know the Enigma is not part of the ICP but I was replying to your speculations about software upgrades. AFAIK The ICP and the Enigma are both from TI.

If you have seen an ICMP before then you must have also noticed it's made up of *two* main cards.

What Marco said.

The ICP and its connectivity are weak points. There isn't a projector brand that I haven't had to reseat an ICP to resolve some sort of color issue. Unfortunately, the ICMP will suffer the same connectivity issue since it uses the same connectors. Perhaps it won't be as temperamental.

Unfortunately, the ICP is stuck in its design era and it the bandwidth limitation factor of 500Mb/s. So if you want 4K to go beyond 30fps (2D and who gives a crap about 3D), it will be up to the OEMs to develop that. I hear that TI does not want to develop the ICP any further and that the training wheels are off for the OEMs. Again, this is just what I've heard.

As for ICP failures, I've had a couple which, percentage wise, isn't too bad. The sucky thing is, I've had 1 or 2 die on a software update! Where not even the mighty icpRecover could bring them back.

Just the opposite here as you know. On some of them when I replace the backup battery it will be the first time the ICP has ever been pulled out. I also replace the ICP fan on the CPU module at the same time as I replace the battery.

Can't blame T.I. for not wanting to develop it any further, especially since the next level of projection evolution may not even involve them...

I'm up to two NECs in as many weeks.

So you are gearing up to change out hundreds of ICP fans eh? Using generic fans or getting them through NEC so they are all ready to go (connector wise).

How about FAN6 (ACON)...ready to change a bazillion of them too? I haven't found the 3-wire version of the fan generically.

Just getting them direct from NEC... I replace AC On, Power On and ICP fans, and the ICP battery all at the same time. Those are the three critical fans. Only takes a little over a half hour to do the fans...

Due to green flashes I finally had to reseat an ICP, well... I didn't physically do it because it was over 8 hours away. I walked the customer who is also an IT guy though doing it and then remarried the enigma remotely for him. Projector is now fine. I am thinking that applying something from Caig Laboratories to these connectors would eliminate having to ever do this. Hey, it's used on Jet planes of all types and Satellites and rockets...
