In 1969, not only were most British cinemas already starting to lean towards the 1.85 aspect ratio, but most any film that had an "American audience," as the case may be was composed for 1.85, and simply protected for lesser ratios.

If you watch YELLOW SUBMARINE Academy, you'll notice there are portions of the image in some shots where they never finished painting the background. Pretty clear indication right there that an Academy ratio is incorrect.

I've never run a print of YS in 35mm, so I can't comment on the AR, but a good rule of thumb is to check how the opening credits are blocked, and work from there. Medium shots are always a give-away. Don't be fooled by "oddly framed" shots like tight close-ups.
