Are there two versions of this movie?
The one you all saw and the piece of crap I saw? I absolutely cannot believe that this chop-socky movie is up for best picture of the year. I guess it just goes to show how bad a year it was for films for this to be considered the best.
Ya seen one kung fu movie, ya seen em all.

I guess I am a bit biased toward kung-fu films... I spent a summer (and I mean the _whole_ summer) tracking down copies of Jackie Chan flicks from overseas.

"Crouching Tiger" was probably only the second movie since "Empire Strikes Back" that I have ever paid full price to see more than once.

I can understand Jackie Chan films, and I'm a real Bruce Lee fan (even his bad ones). But IMHO the only thing this film had going for it was dazzling scenery. The "flying" scenes were laughable. (I though I smelled a rat when I saw the trailers and notice the blatant wiggle wobble from the wire harnesses.) I really expected that later in the show it would turn out that this was some method that the characters were using to pull of the heist of the sword. Then, when I found out they were seriously wanting me to believe that this was "for real"....
The other thing is that I've seen most of the "Best Picture" competitors, and I just can't believe that someone would put this in the same league as Gladiator. From the rave reviews I've been reading I expected something far far better than what I got.
Best foreign picture of the year.... maybe.

After reading all the wonderful comments above I just thought I would let you all know, I could not wait for this picture to be over. I was bored and not in the mood to see this film. Thought it was awfull.

For the record, I thought
"American Beauty" was awfull last year.

Heh, well, I did enjoy this film.

…And I suspect that our bookers are surprised that it is doing as well as it is here. (We're now on our sixth week of having a print of it.)

I won't ramble on about why I liked this film, since I know how well my reviews tend to go over here…

Uh, Peter Pan? This movies great point was the duo between the two ladies. I had heard people saying it had special effects that blew away The Matrix. I have one thing to say to that. NO. The Matrix pioneered bullet time, and did a MUCH better job at hiding fly lines when they were used. Does anyone agree with me on this? Plus, if you are going to brag about your special effects, maybe you shouldn't distract the audience with poorly written dialog at the bottom of the screen. Either do an overdub, or let us add our own words if we don't speak the language. Just my thoughts, what are yours??? ;-)

Huh? You wanted the movie to be either dubbed or totally untranslated?? Gosh, makes me think of all those old Japanese Sci-Fi movies with the hilarious dubbing. Personally, I like subtitles over dubbing, if it's done well. I get a much better idea of the characters' emotions by hearing the "original" voices (had to use quotation marks here since so many movies use ADR).

Of course, if the dubbing is awful -- defined as not-quite-in-sync with the picture or being only a Readers Digest version of what's being said -- then I'd have to agree that dubbed would be the better alternative.

As for no translation, man you must really have some patience

But if your real beef is the "... poorly written dialog ... ", well, I guess I'm more forgiving of foreign films, especially one from China.

I was amazed at the cinematography, though my expectations were not that high to start with. I do agree that the fly-line scenes got to be a bit too much after a while. Now that I've seen this movie, I guess it's time to watch my Eat Drink Man Woman.

Ian was reading me the listings of what our competitors are playing yesterday and referred to the movie as Crouching tigger. We've decided that the remake should be called Crouching Tigger, Hidden Pooh and should be set in the 100 Acre Woods.

I was all set to call this one Crouching Tiger, Hidden Audience before release, then THREE months later, we finally get rid of it last night. The only highlight to this movie were the color tones. They did an excellent job of uplifting the otherwise unbelieveable special(ed) effects.

Not to brag about projection problems or anything, but this print just would not die. It burned so many times for reasons I still can't figure out, but as soon as it was patched up and runn through the cleaner with some FilmGuard, it was good as new. Must have put in 10 clear splices in the last reel alone...

It's been a while since I've seen flying scenes so poorly executed. I am absolutely amazed that they left some of these remarkably poor flying bits in there. Maybe the people that made those comments were applying two different standards of judgement. Cutting CTHL immense amounts of slack because it is from China?

This stupid movie just won't die. It is still running around town, although attendance is pretty much dried up.

I will now back up my use of the words "stupid movie" with a clarification. I have not seen this flick. All I have seen is the trailer and a few minutes here and there throughout the film. But any film where people just run up a flight of "air stairs" 50 feet off of the ground to battle is just plain damn STUPID! Couldn't they have made it somewhat realistic???

Should every movie be realistic? Nah. Lots of Chinese movies are just like this... way over the top. Maybe it shoud be referred to as "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Wires"?
