I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I, too, recently saw it on HBO.

I think you need to be a huge fan of comedy (or certain comedians) to get much from The Aristocrats. I don't think Penn's intent was to make a funny movie so much as it was to allow people to see those you normally see on stage in their real element, breaking character. He could have chosen any joke to discuss; the material really wasn't the point. In fact, the actual joke isn't very funny at all. It was the legend and the remember whens that made this movie entertaining. It almost felt like I was being let in on an inside joke. I saw comics that I have loved listening on stage acting like their normal selves. Come on, Bob Saget? That's good stuff.

Had some good scenes. The mime telling the joke was hilarious.
