That is why until people started seeing the ads for this new movie, everyone was questioning why they would do Joker again because Nicholson's character could never be topped. And to use Heath Ledger? Please... Now all of a sudden it has become fashionable to think Nicholson's performance was inferior. I disagree. I think Nicholson moved very well back and forth between funny and scary/intimidating. I liked both men's interpretations equally for what they were. Tim Burton is the man and if that is what he wanted for his Joker, it was the right choice and Nicholson nailed it. He certainly ended up with more memorable line deliveries than Ledger. I can still vividly remember "You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?" for the first time in the theatre. He had what seemed like 100 one-liners that mixed funny with creepy. Not to digress, but if there was one thing other than dialogue Burton did better, it was the soundtrack. Using Prince for Batman was a great choice. I give both movies and both Joker performances an "A". Nicholson was exactly what Burton's Batman needed, and Ledger was exactly what Nolan's Batman needed. If you switched either one into the other movie, it would never have worked. My favorite Joker line from this one is "This town deserves a better class of criminal. And I'm gonna give it to them." Some of the best scenes with Ledger involve no dialog, but little noises, body movements, and facial expressions as he reacts to the events around him. * * * * * * SPOILERS * * * * * * Stopping to use hand sanitizer when leaving the hospital room, applauding Gordon for being promoted to commissioner as he sits in a jail cell, simply saying "hmmmm" as he seems to be digesting the events unfolding around him, etc. are all classic moments. While not as quotable as Nicholson's Joker, again I find both performances to be exactly what the movie hinged on and exactly what was needed for each film. I will say that I never found Nicholson to be scary or intimidating, and felt he was continuing the role as performed by Cesar Romero, albeit with a little more violent streak present. The sound was wholly unexpected, as I could feel it in my gut. I think I actually felt an echo in therer. "But your honor, I'm not done yet." Badass. Actually, a lot of good quotable stuff here. I'm a dork and attach movie quotationss to most of my work email- will take a while to exhaust the gems from this one. I know Heath was nominated for Brokeback Mountain, but this time I actually agree with everyone's raving about his performance. The audio alone for the "pencil trick" was very chilling and evil and awesome. I couldn't wait to see the scene to find out what exactly had happened.
