Ooooo boy. So you cut a reel in half and added cue marks to it? What's wrong with having a second change-over?

No cue marks - just changeover foil.

This explain why many prints I have seen have what looks like a end of reel wear at that point.
2 prints i have show signs of it.

Well I guess that is one time where we can honestly say that reel-to-reel theaters treated a print WORSE than a plattered multiplex would have.

I'd always run to a third reel and second changeover in such circumstances. Nothing can excuse deliberately mutilating a print.

People - you have to remember we are talking about 1975. There were no platters around at that point (at least none anywhere that I worked at that time). The first time I ran a platter was not until late 1978.

In the case of Jaws .... we were running it at a twin theatre on both sides simultaneously ... with but one print! This was very common in those days. The shows would be scheduled to start every hour (e.g. 1:00 on screen #1, 2:15 on screen #2, 3:30 on screen #1, 4:45 on screen #2, etc.). You had to rotate the print back and forth between the two screens up in the booth. In these situations it made it a lot easier to make the movie fit on two 6,000 foot reels. (Often because of the size of various individual reels this was the only way you could do this and meet the scheduled showtimes.) Never any "mutilation" (nothing missing or taken out) .... just a re-arrangement of the reel breaks.

Whenever I had to split a reel I tried very hard to find a natural break point such as a fade out/fade in or a major scene change where the continunity shifted. For Jaws it was where the land scenes ended and the boat went out on the water. And this turned out to be almost exactly half way time wise for the entire feature.

Sorry buddy, you're not gonna win this one. ANY intentional splice is "mutilation" and will make the print look worse over time.

We sometimes are called upon to "do what we have to do." I get it. but splicing the movie like that...well...it kinda sounds like mutilation to me.

Did you re-mark the print with new changeover cues? Coz that's even more mutilation, in addition to the splices.

Question: What was wrong with the original reel breaks? Were you unwilling to have a 3rd reel?

Manny - if you go back and read his most recent posts, he explains why he did it, and also that there were no c/o marks, just foil.

But that doesn't make it right! [Big Grin]

I remember the Odeon 1 in London had the reels either doubled up or maybe 6000 ft reels but they always changed over to a solo reel 7.

Thanks - Somehow I missed that. The foil cues that bug me are the ones that cover the soundtrack area. Unfortunately, sometimes the operator doesn't have much choice in the matter.

I was helping out at a 700 seat theatre when this film came out. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the entire audience react when the fishermans head came rolling out of the hole in the wrecked boat... Everybody pushed back in their seats... like a giant wave. I loved it.

When I graduated high school, we went to Myrtle Beach, SC for graduation hijinx. Jaws was in the theatre on the other side of US 17. Already, there were people that were just wading in the water, and not swimming.

It was the first film I got when I bought my laserdisc player... DiscoVision!

Saw JAWS tonight at the Century Boulder. Digital print, presumably based on the new master from the recent BluRay release. Auditorium 9.

Not sure if it was 2k or 4k. The movie had that "mushy" low-contrast digital look. Outdoor/ daytime scenes looked good. Screen was decently large (~40'?). A thin strip of the image was projected above the screen, which was slightly annoying.

Audio was good, with more bass and a wider front soundstage than I remembered. The final word in Brody's line "Smile you son of a bitch!" was inaudible, as folks have been complaining about on the BluRay.

Wow, what a great movie! I enjoyed it more than I expected, especially having seen it in the theatre less than a year ago. I was smiling through most of the movie, absorbing it all and noticing little things I hadn't noticed before. And I saw it with a few folks who had not seen it before, and had a great time.

Looking forward to Raiders in two weeks, even in LieMax. Planning to see it at the AMC Orchard based on some comments by Joe in another thread...
