There's nothing offensive in it, but the horse mistreatment scenes might be disturbing if she loves horses. Plus, it's 2.5 hours long and might be boring for an 8-year-old.

What I find amusing about the older crowd for Warhorse is that they often come out to the lobby unable to watch the war scenes citing the death and mistreatment of the horses...... but say nothing about all the soldiers that are being killed and maimed.

I think everybody knows that a person getting killed and maimed in a war movie is "just acting."

But there are still memories or stories of animals actually being mistreated in movies, so when you combine that with the amazing special effects of today, people have a hard time believing that the animals are "just acting" too.

In general I think a lot of people are more bothered and even offended by mistreatment of domestic animals than they are when it comes to abuse or harm against a person. We often see animals as being innocent and defenseless in many ways to the whims of a human being. A grown adult man at least has some resources to defend himself or be smart enough to not get in a bad situation in the first place.

Normal people have a barrier of morality that stops them from doing cruel things to animals. Those that do get their jollies from hurting animals have a screw loose. For instance, serial killers often start out killing animals before they move up to killing people.

It's terrible when something bad happens to a person. However, people (in this country) typically volunteer to serve in the military. They know there is at least some risk they're going to end up in harm's way. They made the choice to be there.

The same thing applies to some violent crimes. Some of the shootings that do take place are often between people in street gangs or involved in the illegal drug trade or another criminal activity. It's a tragedy when a young man is gunned down, but if he's running in a gang it's hard to feel sorry for him.

One thing that gets my goat worse than animal abuse is child abuse. Again, kids are largely innocent and defenseless against the whims of corrupted adults.

In a roundabout way I guess this gets down to the "pick on some one your own size" thing. People who commit acts of violence and exploitation against smaller, weaker people or do those acts to animals are cowardly bastards.
