quote: Stu Jamieson I think you need to see the movie to see what we're getting at, Marcel (I presume you haven't seen it?). Most Disney/Pixars have their moral in the subtext but Zootopia has it right out front. It's one of those movies that delivers it's message directly through the dialogue, y'know, just in case you're a dumbass and somehow missed it. A bit like a joke in a Jim Carrey comedy.
I did see it, back in February already. It's one of the few movies which got an early release around here. Disney and their international release schedules are quite a mystery to me, they probably have their reasons, but that's another story entirely.
I agree that the message it carried was not all that subtle (probably just a slight understatement), but I'm not so sure if it was actually intended to feel so loaded as it does right now. The making of this movie probably started years ago. The fact that the proverbial message of this movie feels so "contemporary" and "political", might also be pure coincidence, since the people that made this movie couldn't have guessed the current political issues around the globe when they started producing it.

Good point, Marcel, and I guess there is a strong geographic element to the themes being pushed.
Here in Australia, all those themes have been kicking around for years and anti-bullying, in particular, has been a strong focus in Australian social policy in very recent times. So, in a way, when it's pushed so overtly in a movie such as this, it feels a bit "done to death".
Personal ideology plays it's part too, of course. Left wingers will think these issues can't be pushed hard enough. Right wingers will be outright offended by them. I'm centre-right so naturally I recognise the importance of the message but feel it could be moderated a tad so as not to insult my intelligence quite so much.
