Agreed with Sam and Steve. Both in my previous and current jobs, I have worked in situations in which the customer expects, and is paying for, privacy. I did once mention on this site that my thoughts on a movie were based on seeing it at a check/rehearsal screening in a Bel-Air Circuit theater: even though I didn't say any more than that, I wondered afterwards if I should even have said that much. On balance I think I was OK: the movie in question was already on general release when that screening happened, and I didn't identify the location, the customer, or the date of the screening.

As a side note, I can recall around half a dozen occasions in the last three years or so on which I was asked to sign an NDA before projecting pre-release movies. Every single one of those movies were utter crap, and were roundly condemned by the critics as such when they finally came out.

I have a theory, which is that as a general rule, when a studio knows that it has a money maker on its hands, they don't care too much about confidentiality in pre-release publicity screenings, because they know that the word of mouth that will leak out will boost ticket sales in the end. But when they have a turkey, the legal paperwork starts to fly, because they don't want potential moviegoers hearing anything about it except what is in their posters, trailers and adverts: they know that the independent opinions will not be flattering.

A group of us watched this new DCP 3D print of Titanic a few weeks ago at our only Dolby Cinema in San Francisco at the AMC Metereon Theatre. Looked great and the surrounds were pumped plus I thought I heard the ceiling Dolby Atmos speakers on at times. Too bad AMC does not advertise in the newspapers as most people in SF had no idea this special new 3D print was shown just for one week only on the nice curved scope Dolby Cinema screen. Only 6 people in the large cinema for a Thursday matinee showing. With Dolby located in SF they do a lousy job getting the word out in the press on these special cinema events. Gone are the days on all SF theatre screens they even show a Dolby sound logo. Time to bring back the Dolby train or marquee and re do them. Other sound systems are out there and I have seen a few of the Barco ones that play before a movie starts. The public has no idea about the different digital surround stereo systems going on these days. The chain cinemas put in some nice new speakers with deep base and then they don't even show off or advertise what they have before a film starts. When was the last time you saw a Dolby Digital logo on a marquee or boxoffice window. I guess Dolby does not care about pushing their cinema product at least in SF they are more interested in selling Dolby sound for the home small screens.

They don't even show the AMC-branded Dolby Cinema trailer in that theater? The Dolby Cinema screens I've visited in the Dallas area and Oklahoma City have played it.

Terry - newspaper? of the few times I've been to San Francisco I don't even remember seeing AMC listed it's theaters in the Chronicle - it's no surprise printed media specifically newspapers are pretty much dead but come on, the marketing of this was largely down on social media. AMC Tyson's week long run of this was very popular.
