Author Topic: Manager/Operators?? Good,Bad or just Ugly? Ky Boyd Hey I'm #23 Posts: 314 From: Santa Rosa, CA, USA Registered: Jun 99 posted 07-11-2000 01:39 AM                       As an owner/manager/operator/a bunch of other tasks too numerous to mention, I have to say that while I'd love to have a separate projectionist for our 5-plex all the time, it just isn't economically feasible. We run with manager/operator Sunday eve through Thur. matinee. Thur night we have a projectionist, Friday Ian manages and projects during the day but has an assistant manager to run the floor, I run the floor and have a proj of Friday and Sat. nights and sunday mats we usually have a proj on, but that's as rich as it gets. With good staff and a competent manager/operator a 5 or 6 plex should be able to run just fine. More than 6, well then you probably need a projectionist around most of the time. Just my 2 cents. Ha. I had the sweetest job in Keene NH just running a carbon arc booth with change-overs. the film was extremely well taken care of and the carbons were being used down to half an inch. Those days are gone my friends. The people we work for don't think one iota of presentation. They think of the bottom line and what it means to them on the golf courses during the summer while we sweat it out with massive crowds during summer business while we slave to sell Gummi Bears and $3.25 sodas while upselling before we go thread up 6 projectors before returning to the box office and then running upstairs to start 3 films then coming downstairs, selling more Gummi Bears, then going upstairs to start 2 more films and then... Was that a run on sentence? Sounds like my job. The presentation is always what suffers. I'm tired of training projectionsts in an art I conceive as valuable when all they want is free movies and little or no responsibility downtairs. Most of them think they're Kingshit as soon as they learn what an intermittent is and how to press the "Start Show" button. I'm with you Tom. On my days off, a 16 year old kid is the semi-manager/operator. Except for Fridays and Saturdays, I'm usually alone in the building while the shows are running. Employees usually only have to stay for "the rush". I've had one other manager/operator situation before this. Before THAT, I was the operator at an 8-screen. At the 8, my projectors were known to be the cleanest in the district. I am currently ashamed of my projectors. The booth is my favorite part of the job, but unfortunately, it seems to be the part that suffers first when things are busy and the "management" side of my job becomes more hectic (a.k.a. "summer"). When you're already working at least 55 hours a week (and getting paid salary based on 40) it's tough to stay late or come in early to give those beasts the TLC they require.
