This will go futhur off the topic for a moment. I was five in 1977. I still think that Episode One made no sense to anyone! It was the movie that broke the back of one of our independent theatres. We sold out ONE show, the preshow at 12 midnight. It caused our entire staff great emotional stress and humiliation when someone would call asking if we had tickets. Episode Two will have to be on film, cause exhibitors can't be that stupid again. By the way, we we the Warner Bros. house for the area in the 1930's, maybe we can get then back again!

Greg, your argument really doesn't hold up here. The first couple of Star Wars movies that were made did not have some silly bumbling dumbass creature and tons of fart jokes in it. Episode 1 was made for kids, yes. The others were not. That is a bad argument. People just wanted more of what they had come to love from before and found themselves in a Barney type of situation.

What about Return of the Muppets ...er, I mean, Return of the Jedi? There were dopey puppets, a man who cried like an idiot when his beloved rancor was killed, a couple of belching creatures, a slapstick death for the mighty Boba Fett, a cattle prod zapping an Ewok's back side, Ewoks in general... Is this movie so different from its 1999 cousin? The enthusiastic hostility towards The Phantom Menace and George Lucas is what doesn't hold up for me.

I don't understand, Ky. What fundamental sin did Lucas and Spielberg commit by making popular movies? Did they conspire to create an atmosphere in Hollywood which publicizes box office figures? Can you blame them for the fact that so many others want to copy their success? Was Lucas supposed to pull Star Wars out of theatres in July 1977 because it was getting too popular? Should he have retired before making The Empire Strikes Back because his wealth had exceeded some kind of limit?

I said the first "couple", meaning 2. Jedi wasn't really of EP1's childishness nor did it stand up to EP4 and 5. I suppose we should've seen it coming though. I don't know anyone who really cared for Jedi. Entertaining little kids isn't hard, just look at that stupid Pokemon movie's success. Entertaining adults is. Besides, it is the adults who pay for the tickets and those tickets are at a higher price than kiddie tickets. If George wants to make the biggest movie of all time, he should be concentrating on the 12-30 range more, not the elementary school range.

Hmmm, gee. No fart jokes or stupid creatures in Titanic!

It is always the kids movies that also appeal to adults that do best. Recent examples are Toy Story, Babe, A Bugs Life and Stuart Little. Lots of adults come to these movies without kids, no adults come to see stuff like Pokemon or Thomas the Tank Engine (I can't even think of any other titles they have been so crap) without being forced along.
On EP2 in DLP only, from what I've read half of your theatres in the US are closing due to financial troubles, and some that are left are having to beg even the basics such as second hand xenons. Tell me that they are going to install DLP, yeah right.

Having seen both Pokémon films during thrusday night inspection screenings, I have noticed that the second film was defintely pointed at times more at the parents/adults rather than the kids. there were several lines and jokes in that one that would have gone WAY over any younger child's head... Lots of well.. interesting double-entendres as well.... You couldn't force me to sit through 'Thomas' at gunpoint however

The Pokémon movies IMO were much better than some of the REEEEALLLY bad kids' movies of the 80s and early 90s:

Heidi's Song

Transformers:The Movie

My Little Pony

Pound Puppies Movie

Care Bears I and II (III was straight-to-video, IIRC)

The Pagemaster

Garbage Pail Kids

The Wizard (Pokémon wasnt the first Nintendo product to have a movie created around it )

Fern Gully

Rover Dangerfield

Rock-A-Doodle

Thumbelina

basically anything non-Disney and animated was pure crap (not to mention that almost all of them were little more than 70-90 minute infomercials for the line of toys or other products...

Or the even worse ones that came later:

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and its worse sequel

TMNT II and III (The first one was not that bad of a film...)

and the worst of them all: Barney's Great Adventure. The movie that makes 'Thomas' look like 'Citizen Kane'...
