With Lord of the Rings we will be in the building until about 7:15. Christmas Day we will open for evening shows only.....BUT....guess who won't there this year for the first time in 5 years. Yup..that's right..l'il ol' me.. We have to work Christmas Day also, although we'll be responding to emergencies only. I get nothing extra (manager, so I'm salary)in my paycheck. This job.... My family is staying in Denver to support a recent widow. My Brother and Sister will be at our Father's house in Washington DC. Uncle Larry is going to Alexandria to visit Aimee's new house. So I'm holding down the fort here in Santa Rosa. Actually I enjoy opening the theatre on Christmas Day. I own the streets in the morning and people are usually in a good mood. What I will miss is a convivial family dinner on Christmas Eve. My mother is prone to doing a Christmas Goose. Once again it may be a vegetarian Indian meal at the Doctor's home, where I went for Thanksgiving, if they invite me back. Greenwood is the fastest growing community in Nova Scotia due to consolidation and restructuring of the Canadian military. English Planters and United Empire Loyalists settled in the area from 1770 to 1790. Primarily a farming community, the establishment of Royal Canadian Air Force Base Greenwood in the early 1940's brought a large influx of people to the community. Today, CFB Greenwood is home to 14 Wing, having lodger units flying the Aurora, Hercules, Labrador, Challenger and T-33 aircraft. Today CFB Greenwood is one of the largest airforce bases in the Canadian Forces. Greenwood has the advantage of having the largest mall west of Halifax. The Village of Greenwood and 14 Wing Personnel Married Quarter's together have a combined population of approximately 4,500 people. The Tivoli has always sucked and it still does to this day. If you like the smell and look of a rotting building, then the Tivoli is for you! It closes at 6.00 on Christmas Eve, closed on Christmas Day and normal operation on Boxing Day. Pays Double time on Boxing Day. Closes 6.00 pm on New Years Eve and normal operation on New Years Day. Pays Double time on NYD. No reduced schedules as far as I can recall in the past. The best instance of this mind-set was two years ago we had a bad winter storm, bad enough to declare a state of emergency in Mass., but my theater stayed open and fully staffed. We had no more than 10 people in the entire 20-plex. Everyone was begging to go home but the Regional Director said no. Interesting, no? This year's Christmas festivities should be a lot easier than last year's as I am working overnights in retail so it shouldn't interfere with dinners, family visiting, or present opening. I believe my store is open till 6pm or so on Christmas Eve but definitely closed all day Christmas. Time and a half is great for working a holidy, but the one retail aspect I would love to see theaters adopt is getting paid 8 hours of regular pay for holidays you don't even work. Some union contracts were able to finagle this in, but mostly it's something I've only seen in retail stores and rarely there too. Same goes for New Years Eve & day. Everyone gets time and a half those days. Also each theatre on Christmas (and Thanksgiving) receives $30 (+$5 per additional screen) for food or party. Usually I throw in another $70 and cook a real nice meal. A large percentage of the staff I've ever worked with the past ten years are happy to be working because they're usually college kids and aren't going anywhere/too far from home. Their coworkers are the closest thing to family some of them have. New Year's Eve is always the tuffie.  |  IP: Logged
