At one of my theatres we used to do the auditorium announcements and as said in a previous thread it started sounding alot like a aircraft speech. It went something like this:The usher would notify the projectionist to kill the music and the usher would go down in front of the auditorium and say... Good Afternoon/Evening my name is _______ and I will be your Usher for this performance. At this time we would like to remind you to please turn off cell phones and activate your pagers to silence during the presentation, if you are attending the movie with a child or someone who acts like one please make sure that they are kept quiet and in their seat. If you have a crying baby, please take them to the lobby area so others will not be disturbed. If you have any problems with the sound, picture or temperature please do not hesitate to inform me or a member of management. Also just a reminder that this theatre is a non smoking establishment and please refrain from keeping your feet off the seats and armrest. Thank you for coming to ________________theatre and please we hope you enjoy your show! You would not believe the clapping and sometimes standing ovations my management team and ushers received when we did these announcements. And the customers really liked them. They said it showed really good showmanship and that it made them feel good that a theatre staff actually "cared" about their customers.

A pre-show announcement can be helpful if there is something unusual in a movie.Back in 1994 I saw Crooklyn at the GCC Somerville Circle. Before the trailers came on, the manager/usher/whatever explained that a certain scene in the middle would look "squeezed" and that it was part of the film. He was right: Spike Lee had that particular scene filmed with an anamorphic lens. FWIW the GCC Somerville Circle was one of many with "Cinema I-II-III" on the front. It closed around 1995 because it was in a hard-to-get-to location near a traffic circle that saw many an accident. The theater was torn down and an appliance/TV store was built on that site.

On busy Fri-Sat nights, Cinemark here has a rolling concession cart going around from room to room. Two of their high-school-age usher-types bring the cart into the auditorium about 10 mins. before the feature is to start. They give a little speech and work the room, bringing stuff to people's seats. When they see the projectionist up in the booth, the ushers announce that the movie is about to start and thank the audience, ending with "We hope you enjoy the movie". Two of the ushers in particular also do a little comedy routine with the audience, asking movie-related trivia questions and giving out samples to the "winners". The audience seems to appreciate their effort, kind of an unexpected personal touch that you don't expect at a movie these days. If there's a full house, they will also work the crowd to get people to close in on all the lone empty seats, thus making more room for couples.Once a smart-ass teenager started heckling these 2 ushers. One of the ushers looked straight at the heckler and said loud enough for the entire audience to hear it "Guy, we're just doing our job so there's no need to hassle us". The heckler immediately shut up and the audience seemed pleased.
