quote: It would only seem logical a checker could take notes on presentation quality as well.
It may be logical, but I'm not sure the average checker employed by a studio would be trained to notice. Nice if they would, though.
At the Pacific Theatre here, there is a checker that is supposed to come into the auditorium every half hour. Their cards have to be filled out and signed, and I have actally seen them come in, BUT its a different person every time, and some things that I notice right away appaarently don't get checked correctly by them.
quote: Some theater operators will be happy to talk about their equipment
In the past, I have found examples when theatres went to the EXTREME in publicizing what equipment they had. An example from May, 1970. Since both of these ad descriptions were from two different conmpanies in two different cities, yet were for the SAME film (a re-release of 2001: a Space Odyssey), I assume they were coordinated by MGM (or at least the Northern California branch office).
Fresno's Warnor Theatre: quote: Return to 2001 experience. The Warnor Theatre is the only theatre in central California equipped with 6-track stereophonic sound. You will hear electronic compositions from 9 overhead Altec-Lansing speakers and 20 frontal A-7 console speakers. 4' high, 3' wide, 3' deep. The screen at the Warner is 50' across and 24' high. You will see 2001 projected from the 70mm Cinerama projectors. Return to 2001 experience.
AND, from San Francisco's Coronet theatre:
quote: Return to 2001 experience. The Coronet is equipped with 6-track Ampex sound system, stereo (magnetic) 840 watt total. You will hear electronic compositions from 5-Lansing speakers 9' high, 6' wide & 4' deep plus 20 surrounding Altec A-7 surround speakers. The screen at the Coronet is 53' across and 28' high. You will see 2001 projected from Norelco AA 70mm projectors. Return to 2001 experience.
And yes, I know some of these figures make no sense and are obviously wrong, but it's still interesting so much detail went into the ads.

I was getting worried that I was going to be sold out on the thursday shows, but it's opening on so many bloody screens in Victoria (4.5 at Silvercity Tillicum, 3 at Capitol, 2 at Alliance Atlantis, and one each at Caprice and Star Cinema) that I think I'll be okay.
Also, for every screen it's playing on, there's a Wednesday night showing as well (10, 10:30, 11:00, and so on).
Vancouver, the film is opening on as many as SEVEN auditoriums at many of the massive 12-20 screen megaplexes. Show up practically ANYTIME during the day and you'll have a show starting in 30 minutes, tops.
This is insane. Everyone is going to have seen this film in two days.
