We still count back change to the customer. Always coinage first. We dont use cash registers because all they do is make you do more work and slow you down(assuming the staff is properly trained and trustworthy, not a multiplex situation). I can usually have the customers change counted back from their order within 3 or 4 seconds of them handing it to me, it shocks some people that an order can be added up just as they are ordering their last item, even with $30+ concession orders.

I like to count back change too. It is easier for me to make up the dollar and then go from there, and I count out loud to the customer who can instantly contest if I have made a mistake. I leave the bill lay on the drawer until I have given the change and then stick it in the drawer. I have had many of arguments with cashiers when I tell them I just handed them a $20 and they give me back change for a $10 - I get the standard "No you didn't" answer... The worst one of these was such an asshole that I bitched to the manager and made them count the whole drawer down (It wasn't busy in the store) then said "Have a nice day, asshole" on the way out... It wasn't in my town... I didn't care! Yeah, so it slows me down just a bit, but I feel much more accurate doing it, especially when someone hands you a $100 bill or something. Then I will even count the cash out on the countertop and let the customer pick it up (handing them the coinage).

I doubt many kids nowadays can make change the old way. I have had people ring up my purchase and the register tells them what to give me back and they can't figure out the combination of coins to use... Oh joy!! I guess I got SOMETHING out of school after all!

To really screw up a cashier, go buy $12.05 worth of stuff....hand them a $20....wait until they type the "amt tendered" in ... then say "Wait, I have a nickel."
I HATE when people do this. I almost feel like saying, "Sorry. You weren't fast enough. Here's your pile of $0.95"

I worked at a place that made it MANDATORY to enter the EXACT amout tendered into the register. If you just hit the button as if they gave you exact change, they'd become suspicious. So everyone just got used to entering it, and giving back the change as it appeared on the screen. Bills first, change later.

I'm not a math person. I'm confident I'd be able to count back change correctly, especially if I did it every day. But the fear of being "over" or "short" by even just a few cents and getting yelled at puts such a fear in the back of your mind that you might as well let the machine do it so you have something to blame it on.

But that's why I avoid cashiering jobs.

I had that happen to me Brad just yesterday at a Dairy Queen. I had to then carefully pour the change into my other hand and put it in my pocket before I could take care of the bills.

My staff will NOT be doing that.

This happened to my wife and me at a Taco Bell drive thru. We bought two Pepsis, $2.40, and I gave the kid a $20...he gave me change for a five. When I complained, he closed the window and counted his whole drawer while people piled up behind me....then opened up and handed me the other $15 without so much as a "Sorry." Haven't been back there since.

As Brad as stated, coins should always be first followed by paper. The cup of your hand that is formed when grasping the paper bills will hold them secure while you put stuff away.

One thing to piss of Wendy's is to put your money away after you have gone from Pay window to food window. They are so quick to shovel your order out that you can't even get settled.

Counting back change to the customer was something my father taught me when I started working in his drive-in restaurant back in the 70's. I still do it today and it makes the little old ladies smile because so few of us do it any more. It also helps move them along because they've counted it with me and don't have to slow down the line by standing there and counting it as they put the change back in their purse.

Hello all. I still count back change to people at Box Office and Concession. Firstly, in box, our computers do not calculate change for us so we have to do it ourselves. Counting it back just helps me to know that I did give the right change. Our concession computers let us do change on the register, but I still just count it out because it is faster than pressing more buttons and it lets the customer know they got the correct change.

My way of counting: the bill is $9.50. They give me a $20 bill. I say 50 cents makes $10. And then $10 makes $20.

Works everytime and yes, many people do smile after I count it back. And hey, I'm still a kid (21 [Big Grin] ) and I know how to do it. I guess it helped that in highschool all the lunch ladies did this everyday at lunch: I just caught on. [Smile]

I am with Paul.... I hate when those fast food jerks try to shove the food into your car while your putting away change.
Now I notice some places don't even give napkins unless you ask for it!

I hate how fast food places dont give you a spoon/fork when you need one.

When you go through the drive thru they always give it to you, but when you order something inside to go, they do not. They could at least say "The forks are right over there."

Has anyone else noticed that at fast food places, the drive thru is always served before the people inside? Usually they will serve about five people in the drive thru to every one inside. I hate drive thru's. They are a testemant to just how lazy we have become.

On the same note, I hate how people will circle a parking lot for ten minutes to get the closest spot to the door. Geez people it's not like you had to walk to the store, although most people nowadays probably should.

Good enough.
