I could smell the smoke threw the booth port glass. I notified management on the walkie, but the guy heard me I guess. He looked up at me and put his cigarette out.

What do you use as port holes? Japanese paper windows?

Micheal, [Big Grin] the port windows are angled wrong and instead of keeping noise in the booth they reflect it outwards. I could have a converstions with you almost while the porjector was running, threw the port glass.

I had the great pleasure of getting a construction worker in a lot of trouble over littering cigarette butts.

Backstory: The City of Lawton is doing a complete water and sewage line replacement and working in my neighborhood. The lot across the street from my house is empty, so the city is using that as a storage place for some equipment and meeting there in the morning before starting work.

One morning I was fixing to leave for work and one of those construction guys parked his truck on the curbside in front of my house. As I was walking to my truck, I noticed the asshole emptying out his ashtray on my curb.

Instead of confronting the guy directly to clean up his pile of cigarette shit, I took the case to his supervisor (an old and rather nice fellow). The supervisor chewed out the guy, made him clean up the trash and sent him home. [Big Grin]

Uhhh, William? If you read the posts you'll see that the guy who posted before me called our posts "whiney". I also said that smokers think non-smokers are whiners (which, as you prove, is true). Then Phil came on and said everybody is a whiner. So I am hardly the only one. Please re-read the thread before you make accusations.

And I am only calling those who litter their butts around as opposed to properly disposing of them a "moron". Not all smokers do that. But the ones who do definitely ARE morons (as are non-smokers who litter). And they deserve to be called names (at the least) if they don't feel like changing their littering ways. If this offends you, then YOU need to stop littering.

Joe, how and I am a whiner? I just don't like people who call others stupid, dumb or a moron and that is all the reasoning they give. Back up your opinions and reasoning with words. If not you are stupid, i am guilty also. You calling me a moron is not the reason I wrote back, it was becasue of the one word name calling.

Yeah Phil, is right we are all whiners.

You are right, I didn't read the other post, I just wanted to play devils advocate.

As a smoker, I personally wouldn't be too bothered by someone smoking in the theatre. Professionally, I do everything I can to keep it out of my theatre. (I do smoke in my office, which contravenes a number of city and state fire codes, and possibly some OSHA regulations, but my office is essentially a windowless concrete bunker so I really don't care.)

The damage cigarette smoke can cause to a auditorium is pretty nasty, too. There is a theatre in Chicago called the Brew and View which allows smoking through some regulatory loophole. The screen at that theatre is about the filthiest thing you could imagine. Close inspection reveals a visible layer of ash and dirt all over it. You can imagine what the on-screen image looks like.

I really don't see the big deal William, and this will be the last time I respond to you about this petty argument we are having. But I did give reason. I said "Moron" in conjunction with littering. It doesn't need much more explanation. If you can't figure out why littering is bad, then we are all screwed. I think that you just don't like anyone attacking your habits, for whatever reason.

As for smoking, as I said in an earlier post, it is up to the individual. I don't and have never preached to a smoker about lung cancer or health damages or whatnot. That's not my problem. But I do say that I think it smells nasty and is pretty gross. That's my problem with it. If you are a smoker and don't smoke around me, then we will get along great! I had a friend from high school who was a smoker. He didn't smoke around me and we still hung out and had lots of fun. A few years later he told me he quit and I didn't even notice since he never smoked around me. We are still friends.

Anyway let's move on. [Smile]

Interesting...

Ok, I reread Joe's post and he clearly(as clear as the nose on my face) did not call smokers morons. He clearly catagorized those who litter as morons. Not because they smoke, but because they litter.

I won't go into my opinions on smoking except that I have had varying degrees of asthma throughout my years and being around smoke is very painful to me. I have managed to get used to it since my Dad smokes but I also have lived in almost constant pain becuase of it.

With that, I hardly consider myself a whiner since I have sat silent through the argument thusfar and only jumped in because of the moron issue. I will garantee however that a smoker's "right" to smoke is much more painful to a non smoker than that non smoker's "right" to not have to have an asthma attack triggered(yes even outside) is to the smoker. I'd put the long going discomfort of an asthma attack up to withdrawl symptoms any day of the week and then we can talk about whining.

Besides, it's a "public" place, so they have "the right to do what they want."
Some people do think that don't they.

A theatre is NOT a public place. It is a private business open to the public who pay to gain admission and have access to a consumable product.

It was always easy to see when someone was smoking in the cinema as the projector beam would become visible , I caught one idiot smoking in front of the port glass , when I came out to investigate he attempted to hide by putting it under his leg , well that didn't last too long before it burnt his leg [uhoh]

OK. I've been quiet about this subject.

I dont smoke. My dad has smoked for 65 years. Smoking doesent bother me.

BUT

It really pisses me off when people stop at a traffic light, and take the opportunity to dump their friggin ash trays in the street. Take your damn butts to a trash can. [Mad]

Ever notice how much energy some smokers put into flicking the butt? Those things can almost fly!

At a traffic light one night, someone flicked a butt that happened to land in my car. I didn;t know it until the carpet started burning in the back seat floor. Damn people!

As for smoking in a theatre: GET A LIFE PEOPLE! IT IS ILLEGAL!!! Enough said. [thumbsup]

In the UK it is up to the local authority to decide if smoking is allowed. 15 years ago a lot of provincial houses still allowed smoking - typically on one side of the theatre, or half the stalls (doesn't smoke rise ??). In a lot of older sites here you can still see where the ashtrays were on the seats.. Multiplexes have never allowed smoking, and as far as I know only the Coronet (at least in London) still allows smoking. You could always tell a smoking house by the colour of the screen !

In "liberal" Brixton, the Academy (formerly the Astoria, circa 1935 atnospheric cinema now a music venue) hired 35mm kit and ran a few "cinema - fumee'" nights, allowing smoking and screening midnight to dawn shows of Cheech and Chong films, Woodstock etc. Typical audiences 600+ @ £10 a pop ($16).. The nights were sponsored by Rizzla (manufacture of "cigarette" papers) and the tickets were even printed on a packet of Rizzlas. Unexpectedly I think it was a copyright issue that closed them down rather than the local constabulary..

May I also express my discust for those that throw flaming butts out of car windows. THAT is moronic, as during the drier part of the season up here can spark fires.

I agree Josh. It's not only stupid but extremely dangerous especially in restricted fire areas.

I live on a hillside and there is always the threat of a wildfire especially in the latter part of the summer when all is very dry.

The LAFD will fine you big time if you don't clear excess growth away from your house. If you don't do it, they will do it and charge your butt up the kazoo.

Also, you cannot get homeowners insurance if there is brush within 300ft of your house...yours or the neighbors!

Bruce: I also think that it is disgusting that those jerks dump their ashtrays on the street or in a parking lot. Let them take that crap home with them and dispose of it in THEIR trash!

The CHP takes a dim view of those dumbass motorists that throw butts out the window. The CHP caught a friend of mine, a VP of a well-known company absent-mindedly throwing a butt out the car window. He was sentenced to 4 months of weekend duty picking up roadside trash. I have pics of this "big-shot" in his jail-bird orange "outfit". Hahhahaha Too Funny! . [beer] (NO IT WASN'T ME!)
