No wonder I loved hanging out at the popcorn stand between reels. Figures.... the minute something is discovered to give sexual pleasure, leave it to politicians to ban it. So the FDA takes decades to ban carciogenic pesticides that get into the food supply and spend hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to determine what amount is an "acceptable risk," but along comes a sexual stimulant and BOOM, it is off the market in a heartbeat. Damn those Republicans. And PS -- Ian, you can take prepopped popcorn off the top of your list of things that will bring down a business. Everyone knows that sex sells and is always good for business. Now we find out that pre-popped with a little aresol sex stimulant is what kept them coming back for more. Managment thought that this would help with cost cutting as we are a single screen semi-live venue. But as you all well know, managment doesn't always see both sides of the issue. I can't count the number of times that people have left and complained about the noise that they make. Even the live performers have commented about the noise while they were speaking. We also thought about that, but trashed the idea very shortly after buying our first case of bags. The individual cost of each bag is less. However, our customers really like the fact that we "layer" the butter topping & shake it up to spread it around. That's not easy to do with a bag (the tubs have "lips" on the bottom that you can hang onto). It has been an issue that comes up periodically, as we look for ways to make things more efficient. Those pre-loaded warmers & "do it yourself" topping stations look interesting on the surface... but pre-filling the bags means the customer would have to make an extra trip or two out of the auditorium in order to get topping throughout. At the drive-in, I'd guess most people would just deal with it, rather than make extra trips to the snack bar for topping. In the end, we've stayed with the tubs. The monsterplexes didn't get good marks overall (they recommended patrons of one to see matinees or early evening shows because the gang wars started after 9 PM). We are the only single-screen left, and we pop our own nightly, and we got "A" marks on everything, except that they said we had a "musty aroma, but we were old, so that was okay." We save some from the night before and mix it in with today's fresh popped, and we use real butter. Remember that stuff? REAL! One indie I worked for years ago actually vented the popcorn machine chimney into the auditorium with small fans. We laughed at this idea, until we saw just how much popcorn he sold! That idea worked well. Myself, I love the fresh popped stuff that's warm from being popped, not from heat lamps. Plus of course the real butter. I don't care much for the yellow Styrofoam some of the other houses sell. Did they ever taste that stuff themselves? Melt 1/4 pound of Real Butter in a large Pyrex cup: microwave 2 minutes. 2. Cook one bag of Orville Redenbacher's Ultimate Butter in microwave: Set 3minutes, 22seconds, push button. 3. Add some popcorn to the Pyrex cup, about 2/3 full. Stir with large tablespoon so that popcorn is saturated with butter. 4. Proceed to the LazyBoy chair, settle in and start the DVD. Eat the popcorn with spoon so fingers don't get buttery. The cup can be refilled with popcorn about twice before the butter runs out. 5. My question for the group here is, Am I using enough butter or should there be more?  |  IP: Logged Randy Stankey Film God Posts: 6539 From: Erie, Pennsylvania Registered: Jun 99 posted 12-31-2003 10:38 AM                     More or less butter is up to you but I think you should clarify your butter before putting on the popcorn so you don't get that "gloppy junk" all over. When your butter is melted let it settle for a while. The whitish-colored "curd" will float to the top. Skim this off and toss it. Use the clear yellow liquid that's left over. Your popcorn will tase better and you won't get that soggy shit in the bottom of your bag.  |  IP: Logged
