I've never understood the point of name tags in a retail environment. They seem tacky and "corporate" and really don't serve any useful purpose (are customers really supposed to call the employees by name?). It's kind of like waiters at restaurants who introduce themselves--unnecessary and a bit too personal for my taste.
Well, I'm down on the floor a lot and I love talking to the customers. I've had a lot of people come up to me and say things along the line of: "What a friendly staff you have, the girl behind the concession stand last week was very helpful". I want to know who is really helping the customers...with the name tags the customers can actually tell me who they dealt with. Same in the reverse situation, if a employee wasn't being friendly, I want to know.

How many people put their real name on a name tag? We've had a few girls who didn't want their real name displayed. In a world full of weirdos, I can't blame them..... I can hear them sometimes, shortly before opening, saying, "I was 'Mary' yesterday.. do we have a 'Britney'....?"

In most cinemas/shops etc. there is a collection of old name badges (from former staff members) that are used when a name badge is lost. It does look a bit comic when Britney is tall and sports a large amount of facial hair.

I don't like the idea of name tags at all. It makes people obnoxious for one. The fact that they know your name but you don't know theirs gives them some sort of omnipetent mindset. When a customer walks up with "How ya doin there..., Tom?" I just read whatever is on their shirt, making a point to lean towards it like they did to my nametag: "Not too bad, and how about yourself... Ralph Lauren?" Sometimes they laugh, sometimes they mutter, "asshole" [Roll Eyes]

Ah yes. The trials of working for a chain. Gotta make sure they upsell and tell you to have a nice day so that you can dangle the proverbial carrot in front of their faces. Screw that. If I'm doing a good job, fire the secret shopper and increase my salary by what they were making! [Smile]

If you truly have a helpful, polite, and outstanding staff, they would know it's proper to introduce yourself to someone whom you are having a conversation with longer than the normal "would you like extra cheese?" And if you have any doubts about the behavior of your staff towards customers, then why are they on your staff? I'm sure you can prune the weeds from the garden without them wearing labels. If you have a true staff, the good ones will let you know who's been bad.
