Author Topic: My time has come.. resignation Frank Angel Film God Posts: 5305 From: Brooklyn NY USA Registered: Dec 1999 posted 10-10-2009 12:27 AM                        Sure it's nice to have big bucks to get everything you want on your wish list and snap your fingers to get it done just the way you want it, but there is also a great satisfaction of being able to make stuff happen on that limited "shoe string" budget and with bubble gum and spit, and then to see it come together and it be spectacular. You can take a lot of pride in your work when you can do it with less resources. And lets face it, it doesn't take resourses to do all those hundred little things in a theatre that make patrons' movie going experience pleasurable rather than them feeling like they are in a cattle run. All the top-of-the-line equipment that can be stuffed in a booth won't give an audience spectacular image and sound if you don't have a professional craftsman like Joe up there keeping it all aligned, correctly operated and maintained and caring about what he's doing.  |  IP: Logged Tim Reed Better Projection Pays Posts: 5246 From: Northampton, PA Registered: Sep 1999 posted 10-10-2009 07:41 AM                       I worked for a radio station like that once. The control room had old equipment that wasn't in very good repair. You absolutely had to watch your mic levels, as it would clip and distort if you went into the red at all; the cart machines had to be potted up and down before and after use, because they might run through the stop cues and play over again.. things like that. Most of the other jocks could've cared less, but I took it as a daily challenge to make those things work to my satisfaction. When the other guys had distortion in their mics, and mistakes due to equipment anomalies, my show usually sounded like a million bucks, as if it were on a 50KW clear channel station -- and that was always reflected in my Arbitron ratings, as well, which I consistently led. I'll have to post one of my old airchecks from the station some day. It helped that I knew about audio, I suppose. I told one of the other jocks about his mic level, which he always pegged, but he didn't believe me. He thought, as many jocks do, that it is a volume control and they want to be loud. As good as your ratings were, imagine if the other jocks paid attention to their levels, keeping listeners' buttons set to your station all the time. John once told me that one station refused to pay for an old Harris board that was on its last legs. The owners were notorious for doing things on the cheap, and told him that they had to live with that board. John insisted that it wouldn't last, so they authorized him to buy replacement parts for it. Of course, he could have gotten generic parts, but he contacted Harris for everything at top dollar. By the time he was done, a new board might have been cheaper! But it did sound sweet! Having to work with few resource funds may be a pain, but it can yield great personal satisfaction...and a few good stories.  |  IP: Logged Louis Bornwasser Film God Posts: 4441 From: prospect ky usa Registered: Mar 2005 posted 10-11-2009 09:44 AM                        Even better is Louis' system of preventive destruction. (I once spent $4000 on an ORC 1000 because the owner wanted "it perfect" but refused to replace the unit. I did argue against this plan for 2 months before I gave in and did what the owner wanted.)
