People who are completely unsuccessful (and I'm NOT stating that everyone who posted is not successful) feel free to post broad-based and unspecific criticism about someone who has been very successful in an extremely difficult and complex field. And regardless of what one feels about Tarantino's movies, you can't deny that this is a guy who loves movies. And, those masters learned from the ones before them. Ingmar Bergman, whom I think most would consider a master - at least he’s quite influential on modern filmmaking - certainly took from Victor Sjöström. Sergei Eisenstein (who influenced everyone from John Ford & Hitchcock to modern day filmmakers) took from DW Griffith’s “Intolerance”… hell, even Thomas Edison & (separately) the Lumière bros would not have produced & developed their cameras & projectors quite how they did, had it not been for Eadweard Muybridge’s various series of still photos. I guess that’s a bit off topic though, eh? This guy knows more about films than most people, and I would dearly love to be exposed to all the films he would likely bring into his theater. Working for Tarantino would be like working in a really crazy archive-this guy has prints of old B-movies not even the stars have seen in decades. I don't know if his operation would work in a small town if he just stuck to playing only the kind of shows he likes. Well, to clarify that, he's definitely a film buff with a wide range in taste. But he would definitely be playing a lot of revival stuff, everything from "blaxploitation" 70's films and kung fu classics to lots of obscure art films, etc. I would definitely show up, but I might be one of only a few. Most small town theaters only seem to attract crowds for big, mainstream Hollywood releases. Unless the film had a ton of commercials run on national TV weeks before its release most people aren't going to show up at the box office. Tune into IFC? Search IMDB? Rotten Tomatoes or any number of other sites? Hell, many people still can't figure out Google. I remember people here in Lawton complaining, "why doesn't any of our theaters get films like The Usual Suspects?" I would have to reply the film played here in town and the Carmike's manager and myself were practically the only people in town who watched it. If Tarantino buys or builds a theater in a small town, its probably going to have to be in some kinda-affluent/educated little 'burg. The going's going to be tough in a place without much culture. My guess is the guy likes Texas. Maybe he could build not too far from Austin, near where his friend Robert Rodriguez gets a lot of his work done.  |  IP: Logged Paul Mayer Oh get out of it Melvin, before it pulls you under! Posts: 3836 From: Albuquerque, NM Registered: Feb 2000 posted 04-19-2005 01:49 AM                        There's an abandoned single-screen in the old downtown part of Torrance, CA that could be the perfect setup for such a venue, if Tarantino doesn't go with that Chinatown location. Could be a magnet for film buffs in the South Bay region (read educated and affluent) that don't want to drive up to Santa Monica or Hollywood or downtown LA, or Seal Beach for that matter. There are no good-quality art houses anywhere in the South Bay. The Music Hall in El Segundo, the Warner Grand in San Pedro, and the Art in Long Beach try hard but they just don't have the money to do presentation things right. Lots of potential in those venues but the technical efforts of the last few years have been pretty lacking. When I win Megabucks (currently sitting at $12.4 million) my dream project would be to resurrect that Torrance theater, much like the American Cinematheque did with the Aero in Santa Monica.  |  IP: Logged Jacob A. First - They'll be getting very cool directors to create GrindHouse style trailers for fictional films to put between and before the film. As to who goes first? It seems that in California - Quentin's hour will play first... In Texas - Robert's hour will play first... and everywhere else - it'll be projectionists' discretion. Same with the order of the trailers before and between the "featured attractions". They will be shot digitally - but in post - they'll be made to have that flawed dirty, nappy - film stock changing at the "reel breaks" faded, pink, saturated 70's film look. Sometimes there'll be a "bad splice" to purposefully cause a missing piece of dialogue. In otherwords... it'll be exactly like a GRIND HOUSE experience... only without the piss on the floor and rats residing in old discarded popcorn buckets in the theater. When I read about Tarantino aspiring to be a theatre manager - it was a boost to know someone so successful would like to do the job that I have been doing for almost 16 years. Anyways - I'd hire him - and I'd work for him. I love his movies and I admire his passion for making his movies. After all - he is one of us that lucked out and made it big.
