I couldn't even begin to give the first dry popcorn fart's worth of amazement from an exhibition company having so and such many thousand movie theaters. I will not be made to care about that. Is that declarative enough of a statement? The only thing that matters to me is that the one movie theater in which I am sitting has really good projection and really good quality sound. If that cannot be managed then I'll certainly make the choice of settling to watch the show via my DVD player and my home 5.1 surround sound system. If there are any such theaters there are very few of them. Granted, I'm quick to praise the Northpark 1-2 -especially for how great this theater was and not being located in New York or Los Angeles. There are theaters that do rank at least in the ballpark, if not equal if their maintenance standards are currently as high as they were at Northpark. I would put in a vote for the Uptown Theater in Washington, D.C. -but it has been a long time since I've visited it. Recent accounts suggest quality standards have slipped a bit at the Ziegfeld Theater in midtown Manhattan. I'm certain there's at least a couple theaters worth visiting in the Westwood section of Los Angeles. The Village Theatre may get all the gold medals in the area, but playing it loud does not mean that it's the best. Since working many of the theatres in that market. I would say that the El Capitan and the old Cineplex Century Plaza Theatres (before Loews trashed the house). Both of those houses had really good projectionists and maintained a good booth. All the really good union projectionists in Los Angeles have left the theatre business and moved over to the studio projectionist jobs. Here in NYC the only theatre that I like going to that I can give a good rating is the AMC/Loews Lincoln Square. The rest of the theatres here all have problems in presentation. They are usually open on weekday evenings & weekends for matinees & night shows. Tom Letness, Dave Holmgren, TJ Hopland & all of their great, friendly crew deserve endless thanks for ressurecting the most beautiful theater in the Twin Cities; booking 70mm roadshows, rarities & early technicolor & silent features; preserving a quaint lobby full of history & conveiniently located next to their very own Dairy Queen; and of course keeping a perfectly maintained & clean set of DP70's for flawless changeovers with rock steady projection. I'm sure myself & several others on this forum could go on for days about all the great parts of the Heights, but the website does all the talking. It looks like the only thing THX certified in NYC is the Tribeca Screening Room now. I cringed at the various ways how a few writers misspelled Tomlinson Holman's name. Northpark 1-2 didn't look like much from the outside (pretty conservative exterior design) but the theater really delivered the quality where it counted and it still makes me angry how this theater was stupidly closed.  |  IP: Logged Steve Scott Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1300 From: Minneapolis, MN Registered: Sep 2000 posted 05-17-2006 01:15 PM                     The Evil Sam might chime in on this, and I'd like to hear his insight, but my parents lived in Des Moines throughout their childhood & had fond memories of the River Hills Theatre, also a THX house & 70mm Cinerama. It was closed & demolished a few years ago to make way for the new civic center downtown. It had quite the reputation among my family & all were sad to hear of its demise. At least DSM still has the Merle Hay Mall Cinema, I saw the Empire Strikes Back Special Ed. there, it was the first movie experience I remember for being technically great.  |  IP: Logged
