Author Topic: Predictions... Gross Winner: Superman or Pirates? Dave Williams Wet nipple scene Posts: 1836 From: Salt Lake City, UT, USA Registered: Jan 2000 posted 06-29-2006 12:35 PM                        This is why I said that I doubt that this will be the case on the "off chance", because really it isn't a gut impression, just how I only personally felt. I too think that people will flock to pirates, only because people are drones and do what they are told. Superman could have cut half an hour from the run time and sped the thing up, might have made a difference in "some" of the critical reviews, but there are plenty who have an axe to grind on the film so that doesn't help it. I am doubtful that I will enjoy pirates too much. Guess I am too much a superhero geek. 'Superman' did outgross all my other films - but more people were sitting in 'Click'. I think the running time of the film has more of an affect. I can run shows all day of my other movies, but both 'Superman' and 'Pirates' are long as hell. I still think 'Pirates' is going to win.....  |  IP: Logged John T. It's not doing nearly the business that was expected. Heard that Disney is limiting the number of prints for Pirates, and everyone in our area getting fewer than first promised. I wonder- what's up with that? But we have had virtually zero kids, so I'm thinking they are waiting for the weekend. We've had a number of people in the door who were amazed that we were "already" showing Superman, so I think a lot of people just think it opens on Friday. Superman is not super at the box office around here. Rentrak shows the same story at other theatres in my area. - Matt  |  IP: Logged Donna Siegwart Film Handler Posts: 63 From: Houston, TX Registered: Jun 2005 posted 07-01-2006 01:46 AM                        So the sad thing with Superman tonight at my theatre was 'Devil Wears Prada' sold out a show and superman has YET to do that in our theatre, and our Prada show has a defect and we even warned guests about it before they bought tickets so they could deside to buy tickets for that show or change their choice. Well looks like super man isnt going to do well this weekend. We are all hyped at my theatre about pirates. We even did a cute little job on our concession stand (we have a pirate flag and all) it kinda looks like a poorly made ship, but our employees had fun making it. hehe. And guests think its cute, and all they all want to come in for our first weekend (all the employees are dressing up) oh and is anyone else having a 'real pirate' acting thing come in to their theatre? oddly enough some guy came in and booked some pirate show in our theatre, apparently he and some other pirate dressed people are going to act out something, sounds odd, i have to make sure to work that day.  |  IP: Logged Jason Black Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1723 From: Myrtle Beach, SC, USA Registered: Nov 2000 posted 07-04-2006 04:01 PM                        I haven't followed the theatre business for a while now... Hell, I barely even know what's playing.. but, without a doubt.. It is going to do gangbuster business, but the movie will suck, much like Matrix Reloaded did unbelievable business, and sucked. There was so much buzz for the Matrix sequels that no one cared about how bad it was. That was until the third one came along, and bombed out, compared to the second one anyway. If this one does in fact totally suck, the third one due next year will eat it up to whatever film comes out then. In the long run, the next superman film will more than likely take off, with Mr. Singer taking his errors on the first one into account. That's my take. We shall see. A theory tries to explain facts we already know, such as saying that Matrix 3 bombed because #2 sucked. Anyhow, like many other theatres, we're enjoying our first sell-outs of the summer. Does anyone think that big business on one movie can parlay into better business for movies that come after it? Like people see the trailers while they are in the house and they enjoy their experience, so they come again for something they might not otherwise see? Absolutely. Especially if the big-business movie is enjoyable. I think we'll get a much bigger "bump" from Cars and Pirates than we did from Da Vinci Code because a lot of people left DVC with a "the book was much better" attitude. Biggest single day ever by $5 million over "Revenge of the Sith." If it holds up today and Sunday it will blow away the "Spider Man 2" 3-day record as well. "Sith" ended up doing $380 million and "SM2" ended up with $373 million. If the public likes it, "Pirates" has a shot at $400 million.  |  IP: Logged
