John, we have different ratings regulations in our country. As a matter of fact, it is possibly a hanging offence for us to display the US rating on our screen.

Your suggestion of an appropriate snipe is a good one and something I have kept in the too-hard basket till the next end scene example comes along. When we had a slide machine we would throw up a slide of the film but now we have E-cinema it's a bit complicated.

Back to the original topic, I've found something that works well is picking one or two of your best ushers out of the crowd- you know, the people that work there that actually do like movies and maybe do kind of care about their jobs- and put them on a "floater" position. Give them a crash course in projection terminology so they know what they're looking for and how to communicate with the booth (none of that "the sound is bumpy" crap), and give them a walkie and a flashlight and turn them loose.

The floater position's sole responsibilities:
-Walk from theater to theater, checking presentation, crowd behavior, temperature, and (if the movie isn't running) cleanliness.
-Help clean the big auditoriums (but can't clean everything).
-Walk into each restroom and do a quick clean-up (wipe the counters, sweep the floor), and call for another usher if a major clean-up or restock is needed.

This puts your best person in front, doing what's arguably the most important job- taking care of the customers.

Of course, if you have more than one manager on duty, you should have a manager doing this too. In my AMC days, it would take a while, but I would walk through all 24 every round, and 99% of the time I'd find something quick we could do to make the experience better.
