Reid Helford Film Handler Posts: 16 From: Dayton, Washington, USA Registered: Feb 2008 posted 05-04-2008 11:39 AM                        Hi Frank, This is interesting and something I asked about when I first started. As the new guy (only 10 weeks), I've followed past practice. The previous manager had done the classic series as non-theatrical for 4 or 5 years. I wonder if we can suddenly change over without some resistance. I would prefer to make the change that you recommend and will look into it (and, of course, get board approval). If it allows us to better advertise our classic films and draw from a larger audience base, and does not cost us a whole lot more... We use a booker to get our films. Could he also do our classic films for us? I have never used a booker so maybe someone else can speak to that. Seems a booker who is dealing with the same dozen or so current titles may find going out of the box to book some older film that he's not familiar with might balk at that, but I don't know. If you are sure that your audience is always going to be so limited that you can never break even on the cost of 35mm, but you do have some political gain from running these older titles, then Swank might be the only way to go as I mentioned in my email. At this time we don't have 35 mm equipment and are forced to use a DVD. Swank is the best route for us to do this. In my conversations with my sales person she told me that as long as we don't get complaints from the big boys that are 45 miles away we can advertise as much as we want. Right now we are giving away tickets on the radio and our local paper runs a front page story on whatever movie we are showing that particular month. We have had no problems with Swank and it has been a great relationship so far. We are currently trying to get a grant from the state to renovate and get new equipment. Once we are able to do that we will begin dealing directly with the studios like everybody else and getting movies prior to their DVD release.
