Ed, there are LOTS of things patrons do that don't make ANY sense!
From our website --
"Evil, Patron-Disturbing Devices:
Cell phones, beepers, "i"s of any type, be they -fones, -pods, -tunes or berries, and wrist-watch alarms must all be turned OFF during performances. It is easy to forget this little nicety, but neglecting it can cause an unnecessary and easily avoidable, major distraction for the patrons around you. Even setting them to vibrate can ruin a quiet moment in a performance, as will looking at the glowing screen to see who is vibrating you! Avoid rude; avoid uncivilized; avoid whole groups of people looking at you as if you had just drowned a kidden. Please turn these devices OFF in the Grand Lobby before you enter the theatre."
I also wrote a section specifically for doctors. It remained published for two months until a doctor called up screaming bloody murder to the GM who then gave me stern looks and had me remove the offending sections (that will teach him not to proof my stuff). I guess I won't have to tell you what sentences I had to clean up --
"Doctors: Although doctors can now rely on cell phones for emergencies, be aware that our theatre construction has been known to make cell reception intermittent at best. We strongly suggest doctors honor that long-standing tradition of leaving your name and seat location with the House Manager before the show so that you can be reached in case of an emergency. And practically speaking, surely there are others at the hospital who can cover for the two hours while you are at the theatre -- let's face it, if someone's life is hanging in the balance and depending on you to make life and death decisions for them, perhaps you should rethink being out partying on the town in the first place, eh?"

Some years ago, I went to the movie theatre in the basement of the train station in Washington, DC. Before the movie, they announced that there was absolutely no talking in the theatre. Anyone talking would be thrown out and there would be no warnings.
They need to do exactly the same thing with cell phone users, whether it's calls or messaging. Once they throw out a few people, the rest of the audience will get the message (sic).
The addiction to cell phones and texting has gotten completely out of control. There are teens who get/send 500 message a day! 500! If someone forced me to text, I couldn't think of five things a day to write and I probably couldn't think of five people to send it to.
But I don't want to place all the blame on teens. I see people of all ages checking their cell phones constantly during movies. It is incredibly annoying to me. If you can't be away from your phone for two hours, perhaps you should watch movies only at home.
Now while theatre owners might say that's exactly what they don't want people to do, if the texters don't stay home, the people who are annoyed by the cell phone users might instead.
