Disney's theater count on it is only 3100 or so. Why is your number so high?

Andrew: Think of Ven diagram. There is a lot of overlap where theatres are playing 2D & 3D.

That is what I would assume, but the wording of the post is strange. It think it would be more accurate to say each theater in each category is unique and may have multiple prints, but that some theaters are included in both categories.

The discussion was about the relative number of theaters playing 2D and 3D.

That said, here are the numbers for today, with the total uniques playing either movie as well:

Need for Speed 2D: 2,717 theaters
Need for Speed 3D: 2,420 theaters

Playing some variation of Need for Speed: 2,773

Keep in mind this only covers the United States and its territories. No Canada, Mexico, or UK.

As for why the box office numbers reflect 3,115 theaters: The difference may be in the number of theaters whose showtimes we don't have at a given time. Some theaters don't submit their showtimes for a variety of reasons. Some theaters only run on the weekend.
