Don't know quite what to make of it at this point, but a few days ago Regal and all their associated screens dropped the daily display print ad in the major newspaper here in SoCalif, the Los Angeles Times. They join AMC in this decision -- AMC dropped their print ads about a year ago -- so the only "major" chain now running a corporate print ad locally is Cinemark, and they've squeezed it down to a smallish size. We do still have Pacific Theaters doing daily ads, along with Regency (which is a lot of the former Mann Theatres venues out here), as well as several smaller operations like Laemmle and Landmark.

But what's the significance of Regal dropping their ads now? Is it simply to save money? Have they gotten on the digital/internet advertising only bandwagon? Or simply trying to make their weekly expenses look lower, to pretty up for possible purchasers?

I would suspect that so few people in the theatre going demographic still use newspapers to find out what's playing so that advertising there is no longer cost effective.

Hey, I'm 60 years old and I use the internet and TV advertising to decide what I want to see, and my phone app for showtimes. Most people in their 20's and 30's barely know what a newspaper is.

Dropping the paper ad means nothing, a few years ago ad rates in most markets skyrocketed, so just about everyone dropped them.

Add me to the group hoping that Regal gets bought up by foreign interests and sold in pieces to the smaller regional players like Starplex, Bow Tie, Wherenberg, etc.

I don't think there really is all that much to it. I can't imagine that there are that many people who do not have internet but who are also frequent moviegoers as well. People who really want to see the movie will figure it out.
