Mike, I know what you mean about un-watched discs. I made at least a few of those purchases back with DVD. With the Blu-ray format I've been a lot more careful about buying movies with repeat viewing potential. If the movie isn't going to be watched more than a few times it might as well stay on the store shelf.
Most of my movie renting is done at the local Hastings store. I prefer renting Blu-ray discs, despite the bare bones rental-specific discs used by studios like Warner Bros. and Universal. Hastings almost always gets their rental discs the same day as the retail version is released, which is often a month ahead or more when Netflix gets the title, if Netflix gets it at all. The streaming services overlap each other with some movies, but have exclusives on others. Someone going entirely with the streaming route may have to subscribe to 3 or more services to cover their bases. And even then there's lots of titles that don't end up on the streaming services at all. And there's even more catalog titles that either don't end up on the streaming sites or they get deleted from them after a certain amount of time.
TV shows are mostly what I watch via streaming services, like binge-watching all of Breaking Bad. My girlfriend is trying to get caught up on seasons 1-5 of Justified; the final season starts tonight. We'll watch a movie on Netflix or Prime usually out of impulse, perhaps a movie we overlooked or something. The ones we specifically want to watch, ones that we didn't catch in the theater, usually get rented on Blu-ray first.
