Technology and the ability to have instant gratification do play a part in that but I STILL believe that this is no excuse for people in business to serve the public, be that retail, food service or entertainment, to treat customers like cattle.
It's a two-way street, isn't it? If the customer is nice to you, you're likely to be nicer to the customer, and vice-versa. If I encounter a festival organizer who is aggressive and narcissistic and gives me a region C BD (for example), I will politely point out that our technical specs sheet makes clear that we can't play those, and that we can only show this content if they can come back with something a format that document says that we can read. However, if the festival organizer is polite, apologetic and "I know that this probably won't work, but I don't suppose there is anything you can try?", I'll offer to put it through DVDFab and make a region free copy for their show.

The show "Life Hacks" on Discovery or TLC or somewhere touched on this subject.

They sent two guys separately into a restaurant for lunch. Same time, same waiter. One guy was to act very friendly, "Knew how to use the servicepeople" as Randy pointed out, and the other was to act not horribly, but slightly below average. The service reflected it GREATLY. The nice guy got preferred window seating, MUCH quicker and more attentive service, got his food quicker, and even got free desert on the house. The below average guy got crummy seating right next to the kitchen entry, poor service, passed up many times for refills, poor waiter attitude, etc.

I was not surprised by the results, but it was truly a marvel to watch in progress. I know I treat nice customers better. There's a nice old regular lady that I let in free often, we know each others names, chat, etc. Then there's another regular lady that makes it a point to complain about SOMETHING every visit, with a very bad attitude, that I wouldn't dream of letting in free.
