They may be attempting to build a company that serves a wider/more diverse audience. In having megaplexes, luxury venues, dine-ins, traditional multiplexes, and even sub runs (yes, they are now moving in to the sub run business), in large/medium/small markets, they will be expanding their reach via serving a variety of demographics ("covering all their bases" if you will).
Diversifying the product you are selling, to appeal to more people, seems like a smart business move to me.
