I was there on the next to last day. I went to the first show because it was the only show of the day to be showing SW in 2D. I had already seen it in 3D (at a LieMax theater) and didn't want to sit through the dimness again.
I expected it to be empty and was surprised to see how crowded it was. But as the owners of many clubs I've gone to on their 'last nights' said, "if this many people showed up all the time, I wouldn't have had to close".
What was surprising to me was that Clearview did not own the building - they only owned the lease. They were supposedly told by the real-estate company that owns the land and buildings, the Fisher Brothers, that their lease wasn't being renewed, although Clearview was apparently looking for a reason to shut it down anyway, since it lost money. (Although Clearview owned the lease, it was actually operated by Bow-Tie, to whom Clearview sold its last few remaining theaters to back in June of 2013.)
This theater did not have to close. Some years back, Disney wanted to buy the theatre from Clearview to make it the east coast equivalent of the El Capitan, but Clearview refused to sell.
Especially after Bow-Tie took over the day-to-day operation, there has been absolutely no marketing of the theater. No special ads in newspapers, no film festivals, no special programming, etc.
The Ziegfeld used to be the place where you could expect to see new theater technology first. But they hadn't upgraded in years. No Dolby Atmos here. And while it was probably still the best place in NYC to see a movie in terms of the overall experience, it no longer had the largest screen - the Ziegfeld's screen was 52' and it had standard seating.
Back in the day, the Ziegfeld added special equipment for some films, notably the original release of Close Encounters... and for Apocalypse Now.
NYC certainly did not need another ballroom. The Hilton is right across the street and there are many other hotels within walking distance. Personally, I think the 'ballroom' is just an excuse to have another business fail so they can get permission to tear the building down and build another 80 story apartment building for billionaires.
And yet, in an age when far too many people are willing to watch movies on an iPad, it shouldn't be surprising that a theater like this couldn't survive.
This is bigger than the closing of one theater. Without the Ziegfeld, I don't see very many movie premieres being held in NYC anymore and without that, I think it can hurt the entire film business in the city, due to the resulting perception.
NYC was once the biggest movie-attending place in the country. Since 2001, we've lost almost 19% of the screens and almost 35% of the theaters, although we are getting three new theaters and 23 screens by 2017.
