Almost all elevator doors are equipped with both light sensors and pressure sensors. The automatic door we'd installed in the office does have a pressure sensor besides the primary IR-based proximity sensor. Also, I doubt the door mechanism has sufficient power to really seriously harm anybody.
The problem with a recliner is that the pressure sensor needs to be intelligent. If it is moving in the upward direction, there might be considerable pressure/resistance due to the lifting of the legs of the person occupying it. But on the downward movement, no such resistance should exist.
Also, I think, the controls on the seats themselves should never be disabled. If there is automatic movement, due to the seats resetting to the original position, any input on those panels should immediately stop any movement and allow it to be undone.
In addition to that, I think that the timeout of 4 seconds is just stupid short. What if you indeed just want to look under the seat to see if your lost keys are there? What about a timeout of 2 minutes? Nobody is going to turn-around a theater in two minutes after the last patron exited the room anyway.
