Chad, you want people making movies to quit chasing dollars? You do realize that chasing dollars is the only way studios stay afloat? And by them staying afloat, they can put money into less dollar encumbersome movies that have more quality and artistic feel?As for another IJ movie, this is a franchise pic that is guaranteed to make money. The studios need this, and the public needs movies right now that they feel comfortable with, that make them feel that things are all right. Franchise pics do just this thing. With the way the world is right now, new ideas and movies are not making the impact they once did. People are nervous and want stability. Thats why star wars movies, spiderman, etc. make money. Thats why the franchise wars are on right now, forget the clone wars baby. We have lord of the rings, star trek 10, harry potter 2, star wars, the matrix, men in black 2, and the list goes on. People need these movies to feel safe and studios need money to stay afloat, and theaters need money for the same reason. So pray to god and thank your lucky stars that IJ4 will be made, because that will be dollars in all of our pockets. Dave

"...the public needs movies right now that they feel comfortable with, that make them feel that things are all right. Franchise pics do just this thing."Gee Dave, how insightful. So, does July 4, 2005 still mean right now? I would consider 3 years away to be "future". As far as "new ideas and movies are not making the impact they once did", it sure seems like Shrek and Fast & Furious made a decent enough impact. Saying people need these movies to feel safe is kinda a load of crap, don't ya think? People will always lean toward familiarity, but all these sequals were new ideas just a couple years ago, and obviously they did well enough to justify another. I never said I didn't want Hollywood to make money, just that it can be done with new stories (and as far as profit margins go, don't actors typically get paid more to do a sequal of a hit?). Give people a little more credit than assuming they can't feel safe if they don't see a sequal. That's stretching it a little. Or a lot.

Its the chad!First of all, yes it is quite insightful that franchise pictures make people feel more secure in thier world, and that is not a load of crap as you put it. As for IJ4 bieng in 2005, yes thats a bit off isnt it? WOW, did only you get the press release? Jeez buddy, why didnt you let the rest of the world know how smart you are instead of holding on to that so secret bit of information? Hey, get a clue and watch the news baby! Didnt you hear, the war on terror will go on long into the next presidents term. With the war on terror lasting so long, this puts people on edge much longer than normal, and most wars last for years, not the lucky one we had back in 1992 that lasted for around 100 days. With that in mind, familiarity is key in making money. Yes, the studios get lucky with some new picks, like with SHREK and FAST AND FURIOUS. I do like the fact that you helped to prove my own point with these movie picks, as they have become franchise pictures, with both having at least one and possibly more sequels in production on each. So I thank you Chad, for agreeing with me, without even realizing it. You see, the studios know that they either have to remake, repeat or redo whatever worked in the past, or have such a great idea that would create a new franchise. There is no way a studio will put real serious money into a picture that has no chance at creating a new series of pics. That is just not practical in this day and age. There are a few exceptions to every rule, even this one. There are some great movies that have no chance at sequels. This helps to balance out the large load of crap that they keep spewing at us at breakneck speed! Films like Oceans 11 or Insomnia will attract people and make money, but not all films have this chance. Most films like this have well known actors or directors attached to them in order to sell them, and even with that, there is the familiarity clause in the argument. How many people really went and saw Gosford Park? Dave
