Hey Gang! What's with the screen names anyway? IMHO people "hide" behind screen names so they can say things they would not say if others knew who they were. If one doesn't stand behind what they say or can't defend what they say then why say it at all. Are screen names just a way for people to insult others anonymously? Personally, when I use my MSNIM or post I use my real name. But I have seen a lot of garbage talk by people hiding behind screen names.

Robert, in many, if not most cases, people use screen names to avoid unwanted contacts. If someone knows your real name, they can probably find your real email address and start sending you spam of all sorts. It also eliminates a degree of potential internet stalking. Some people do abuse the anonymity, but you never know who you're going to run across in a public chat room.

Yes I'm serious, we never gave names to the screen.
We would give names to each of the perfs in the screen - Harry, Ted, Joan, Alonzo, Pietro, Lucinda, Lawanda, Chonita, Wynonna, Patroclus, Betty, Terence, Tyrone, Maybelle, Myrna, Cecilia, etc., but we never gave names to the screen. That would be nuts.

I can see why you'd want to give each perf a name. It is important to be able distinguish between them promptly as the need arises, which is often.

Joe, yes it is. I don't have a problem with people here knowing me or knowing how to get a hold of me. If someone knows me and my name, they could do a google search, find a link to film-tech, and then get a hold of me. That is also fine, as theoretically they know me for one reson or another.

I don't really use chat programs often, but, for example, if I was to enter a public music chatroom that had 75 people in it, I would use a nickname. Otherwise, it would be a little like posting your email address (or potentially address and phone number if it is listed) on a bathroom wall. If people you don't know (and/or don't want to know) get your first and last name, they can track you down much more easily. It certainly isn't a perfect means of security, but it cuts down on spam and annoying email from strange people.
