Actually, I use Netscape (4.7), and I also kept getting "Film-Tech down" messages for three weeks after Sept 11. I thought it was being kept off so that there wouldn't be tons of messages about the WTC thing.

After three weeks, I got on, and noticed people had been posting all that time. So, it wasn't just a MS Explorer problem.

Regardless, I dislike MS Explorer; I much perfer Netscape. However, the point may be moot in a few years, since I don't think Netscape is going to be supported much longer. Also, MS has been successful in getting their IE on just every PC (for example, I have a CAD system that now requires IE if you want to use the "Help" files.)

From what I've read, MS actually has also written their own Internet Protocol. They are waiting for people to be totally sick of being hit with IP related hacks (denial of service, etc.,) and when people are desperate, MS will say; "We can help... just use our IP and everything will be fine ....!" Which is really slick, since MS themselves will make things worse by adding the ablity of XP to spoof IP addresses (the current "standard" install of Windows does not allow spoofing.)

I'm sorry the MS anti-trust thing didn't go through, because they need to be controlled. Stupid judge couldn't keep his mouth shut.

John, the FAQ has instructions on setting your Netscape browser to not cache. This is assuming of course that it was in your computer and not a problem with your ISP. (Any ISP that would cache pages for 3 weeks though doesn't deserve to be in business.)

I just checked the changes with a nightly version of Mozilla (aka Netscape 6.x), and there were no problems.

My only complaints, with both Netscape and Mozilla, is on occasion the new posts/no new posts icons don't show, it doesn't show the date/time of my last visit, and the unread icons show as read in the forums. These all happen at the same time which makes finding new post a bit harder.

Hey there, Brad; My cashe was/is already was set to: "Every Time."

My ISP is Optimum; I had to go with them when @Home died. I didn't know that my ISP would cashe stuff.. I'm gonna look into that, because you're right: they shouldn't do that.

I saw Bob Marr on Wed.; he had the same problem then (although I see he's on now.) Don't know what his ISP or browser is, though.

OK, this is a bit over my head. I think I'll just sit back and wait for it to be fixed.

Brad, I appologize. I did not inted to be "telling" you what to do with the site. I was merely offering a suggestion. Please forgive me if you thought it wasn't worded as such.

Adam: Maybe Joe already answere that question, but that doesn't mean I understood it. But that's ok. It's a bit over my head.

John: As I understand it, ISPs use a "proxy" server which can be set up to cache pages locally and reduce the amount of bandwidth they have to pay for. In other words, recently (or no-so-recently) accessed pages will be served to you from the proxy server instead of the real server.

I'm sure that Joe will agree that proxy servers suck, especially when they're not set up properly.

Yes, proxy servers suck ass. My ISP (Wide Open West) uses proxy cache. It's not horribly bad, but the worst thing it does is not show the most recent posts on UBB forums (and only UBB). If I make a post I will not always be able to see it right after until someone else makes a post in the forum (on any thread). They allow 3 different MAC addresses to be connected from one account. 2 of mine are connected "normally" to 3mbps full duplex pools. The other one is connected to a "faster than 10mbps" full duplex pool which has a static IP and no proxy. That's the one I use. I can switch the MAC address numbers in my router with ease, so if there is a problem I can check the other pools and see if it is on my end or on WOW's end.

There is absolutely no reason for bandwidth to cost even half as much as it does. It's price gouging. Hopefully the industry will settle and prices will come down... then we can do away with proxy cache altogether and everyone will have a connection that is at least 10 times faster than a 56k modem.

By the way, working or not, does everyone hear the sound when the button is clicked (clicking on the "Forums" or any other link in the Flash menu (not the regular one) should give you a "woosh" sound)? I can hear it on all of my computers and browsers, both PC and Mac. But I have heard that it doesn't make the sound on Netscape 4.6 (I use 4.77).

It's true...when I put my hand over it it becomes erect!

...Oh, and I like the way the links get bigger too, but I digress...

The one major problem with the new design is that Lynx users get a "this document has only hidden links, hit 'L' to display" message. This can be confusing and annoying and requires another step in order to get to the forum. It's not a big deal, but I personally preferred the older design...

Well we removed the Flash design because evidently there were a lot of people who couldn't figure out how to click on the link on the main page to get the site back to "normal" even though it was in BIG red letters and flooded our e-mail boxes. All of those people used IE on the PC.

I guess we'll keep the site simple and ugly for ya, folks!

Joe: I heard the sound effect using Netscape 4.08. Thanks for trying ... it was fun while it lasted.

Simple and ugly...no problem, it's the information that's important.

Besides, if you wanted to get rid of simple and ugly, you'd have to take out many of the pictures of us film-tech'rs (myself included)!

Though IE won't work, accessing this site via Microsoft Outlook (in my case Outlook 2000 SR-1, version 9.0.0.4527) works fine with no errors, and the pages refresh themselves after you've posted too.

Funny - you'd have thought that the browser capability in Outlook would just recycle some of the code from IE. Clearly not, as it seems to be reasonably bug-free. Maybe it's a case of Microsoft giving away the bug-ridden crap for free (or at a reduced price), but producing reliable stuff which you have to pay through the nose for. The price differential between Windows ME and W2K certainly supports that theory...
