Ever since I was abroad on July 4th, I've never quite looked at the day the same...Allow me to expound... Now, this was when I was between my sophomore & junior year of high school, and participating in a short-term student exchange program. Ipso est, I spent three weeks in Costa Rica.  On July 4th, the US ambassador to Costa Rica hosted a party at their residence ... BIG party. Lots of free or at least very cheap  'adult beverages'. Thus, a large crowd of people were half in the bag before noon even rolled around. At noon, they played the 'Star Spangled Banner' and hoisted up the US flag - for this the crowd was dead silent.
Immediately following that, the Costa Rican national anthem was played, and the Costa Rican flag was hoisted - the crowd was buzzing with conversation, and practically no-one paid any attention to what was going on.
I was flat out disgusted.
It was so unbelievably rude behavior, en masse. *sigh*
